"I could win the scoring title every single year"

LeBron JamesLeBron James currently leads the league in scoring with an average of 29.8 points per game. He holds a slight edge over Kevin Durant, who trails by just a tenth of a point at 29.7. But according to James, whether or not he finishes the season on top doesn't matter. What does matter, however, is that we are all aware that he could win the scoring title if he wanted to -- every single year.

This ridiculous bit of braggadocio comes from an ESPN.com story, and the exact quote that was printed went like this:

"If I really wanted to," James said, "if I really wanted to be the scoring [champion] every single year -- every single year -- I could really do it. But it doesn't matter."

Now, don't get me wrong -- I know how these things play out. This comment likely came out of a broader discussion about the possibility of the Cavs securing home court advantage throughout the playoffs before the end of the regular season, and whether or not they'd rest James if that indeed ended up happening.

Even so, it's still an inane thing to say.

I'm not sure why this shocks me really from a guy who wore a T-Shirt saying LBJ MVP.

I really don't like this guy, have I said that on here before?

I saw this a little while back, maybe a week or two. I couldn't believe that you didn't have it posted then HT!

I saw this the day he said it and my first thought was: He could ! .

BTW, the full quote is:

Scoring race heats up: James and Oklahoma City forward Kevin Durant are locked in what has the potential to be one of the tightest scoring-title races of all time. James inched ahead of the Durant when he scored 38 points Wednesday and Durant managed just 25 in the Thunder's victory. James is at 29.8 points a game and Durant is at 29.7.

Both men have played 70 games and James has just seven more total points, 2,086 to Durant's 2,077. If only they cared about it. Durant has already said he thinks James will win. James says he doesn't care and, if he did, he'd win the scoring race every year.

"If it happens, it happens, it is not important to me at all," said James, who won the scoring title in the 2007-08 season and at 27.8 points a game is currently the active leader in career scoring average.

"Our team is trying to clinch (homecourt advantage) for the whole playoffs and is more important. If I really wanted to, if I really wanted to win the scoring title I could win it every single year," James said. "Every single year, I could really do it. But it doesn't matter to me."

^ Thanks I was looking for the real one but that one was the only one I found. I have been busy so I just got around to it. :D I figured some people on here would have something to say about it so I couldn't pass it up.

Lebron's problem at times, to me anyway, is that he goes the wrong way about emphasizing a point. Here he is trying to emphasize that what matters to him most and what is important is the team accomplishment of clinching homecourt in the playoffs. In doing so, he's indicating that he thinks that if he poured all his energy into scoring and nothing for the team, he could be the league leader each year. However he of course comes off as an arrogant jerk who seems to say "It doesn't matter what you do, if I wanted it, I'd get it."

LeBron's problem is he is brutally honest. There's little doubt in my mind that he could decide to win the scoring title and do it if he decided that's what he need to do. Maybe it wasn't the best way to say it, but it's probably the truth, just like it would have been for Kobe in his prime, or Jordan, etc.

There is probably 5 or 6 guys that could say that right now and it be true, but none of them do. Being honest and being an arrogant jerk are 2 way different things.

I don't have a problem with it.

I agree with DragonFire's assessment.

:thumb: I'm not exactly a huge Lebron fan, but I have to agree with this. He sounds really arrogant, and he probably is... But he is speaking the truth.

As Hammertime said, there is about 5 or 6 other guys who if they really wanted to be scoring champ, they could be. Lebron probably would have the best chance, but there are some other guys in the NBA, that if they wanted to be scoring Champ too. They could end up giving Lebron a run for his money for it.

I mean any one star player right now could win the scoring title right now if they wanted to, if no other star is trying to make that their goal to.
