Not new, but new to me since being introduced to the solo material of Guy Blakeslee. Here he is with his band The Entrance Band doing "Lookout".

 

Their stuff is pretty hard driving groovy psychedelic with a late 60's early 70's vibe. This tune is pretty straight forward and to the point where a lot of their stuff is jammed out and involved.

 

The awesome girl bass player for this band is Paz Lenchantin who is known for having played with A Perfect Circle, The Pixies, and Zwan with Billy Corgan.

I'll pick this thread back up...I came across these guys when they opened for Frightened Rabbit this past June. One of the best opening acts I've seen in recent memory. Caught them again at Forecastle, and then on their own at Zanzabar here in Louisville.

The voice of the guy who sings in Mandolin Orange reminds me a little bit of a pretty unknown folk singer I know from Texas.

Early 80's was some great music. Journey is my all time favorite band, and I do love Whitesnake as well!

A couple of summers ago, not knowing a dang thing about any of the acts that were scheduled to play Bellevue Ky's Riverfront Music/Beer Festival (or whatever it is officially called), I arrived late enough only to catch the last performance.

 

It was a dude in a cowboy hat and a guitar and harmonica with two female backup singers standing on either side of him. Instantly my brain heard Ryan Adams and a very smooth voice serving up instantly likable melodies. I was hooked and made my way to the sound guy with no delay to make sure I caught this guy's name.

 

Ruston Kelly was the name.

 

He really put on a solid show with the "right after sunset" backdrop of the Ohio River as it settled into dusk accompanied by the assortment of city lighting that reflected on the water.

 

Song after song highlighted his smooth southern voice while the backup vocalists gave sweet fantastic support to the mellow alt/country vibe that he was serving up.

 

"Did he sound too much like Ryan Adams", I asked myself, but because of his fine voice, "It didn't matter" I instantly replied, and settled on the lawn to enjoy some good ol relaxing mellow alt/country sweetness.

 

When I got home I researched deeper to find a handful of nice likable tunes on Youtube from his then lone EP "Bootleg Sessions", and a couple of live performances videos. He's listed as being a Nashville native now just beginning to garner attention.

 

In the Autumn of this year he released what is referred to as the "Halloween" EP though it has 10 tracks on it. It's real good stuff with added production and instrumentation that his sparse 1st EP didn't have, but both are as equally likable.

 

He sprinkled his mostly original tunes show with a few fine covers such as Ring of Fire, and Tim McGraws great "Nashville Without You".
