Shelby County school split?

Featured Replies

Can anyone enlighten me on the upcoming merger, split, etc. am reading about for the Shelby County school district? What is going to happen? How will affect Shelby County's players, coaches, etc.? What will be the name of the schools? Out of the loop on this, someone fill me in. Thanks.

Martha Lane Collins is the name of the new school.

I'm told it's basically an equal split ... the two schools will be around the same size, and neither is expected to have a big edge athletically.

So it will still be Shelby County and then Martha Lane Collins for the other half, right?

Correct. West middle will feed Martha Layne and East middle will feed Shelby Co for the most part.

Is it open enrollment or based on address? Do the Freshman or Sophomores at Shelby have the option of remaining at shelby?

It is based on address and districting. The upcoming seniors that live in the Martha Layne district had the option of choosing to stay at Shelby Co. I believe they were the only ones offered a choice.

However, you know as well as I do that if a so-called "stud" in football or basketball wants to go to Martha Layne instead of Shelby or vice versa and they live in the other district, then there are many ways around the districting(he with grandma or he lives with his aunt) and that athlete will go where he wants, Im sure.

I think that is correct.

And it's what should have happened in Laurel County when North Laurel was built. There was no need to change the name of the original school to South Laurel. The students are in the same building, play ball on the same field and gym. They're still known as the Cardinals.

In the KHSAA state tournament basketball program it lists Laurel County as winning 1 state championship and South Laurel as winning 1 state championship, when in reality Laurel County High has TWO state championships.

I think that is correct.

I'm pretty sure that when the new Thomas Nelson High School is split off from Nelson Co. HS, NCHS will retain its name.

I heard Hicks is staying at Shelby County.

I've heard he'll be anywhere but...I'm hearing rumors of MLC and that he'll leave the county.

I'd say it's pretty much a toss-up right now where Hicks will wind up.

I think that is correct.

I would argue that they're not the same school. The 1982 state title was won representing a school that consisted of students (and basketball players, I assume) from all corners of the county.

When South Laurel won, it was a school of students from just part of the county.

I heard a coach from Eastern Kentucky was offered the job of head basketball coach here...
