Why is Health Insurance a Right?

Insurance is different than medical profession.

Correct, but no insurance company profits, translate to less profits for doctors and the like.

1. What about those who want insurance and can't get it? Their "American dream" is destroyed because of an unfortunate health issue that causes financial ruin. How should we help them?

2. How about the person who gets cancer and then is dropped by their insurance carrier? They get insurance, pay for protection and then when the very situation they paid to protect occurs, their protection is withdrawn.

That is where my frustration is. Good hard working people who did what they were supposed to do to protect themselves and then are ruined because of a health issue.

1. Laws cannot be written based on isolated incidents. It is very easy to come up with anecdotes of this or that situation, but quite frankly, for those of you who like to talk about the "greater good". Our constitution was written to protect the greater good, not provide for the greater good. There is a huge difference. Their dream is not destroyed, it has simply become more difficult. There are current laws (ie bankruptcy) and programs (already in place) to help them get through their situation. Especially for children.

2. Isolated

3. This is not meant to sound heartless, but it is a fact that bad things do happen to good people. However, there are already programs in place to help good people, and, good people will usually find a way to recover.

I will take a stab at this and I am sure you will correct me if I am wrong. How about a young adult who has to move from their parent's coverage but has a health condition that no insurance company will write a policy on? Is that one? :idunno:

If you go to school, you have 7 years from high school graduation to find a job that will cover this for you. ***My personal opinion is that it shouldn't matter whether you go to school or not. Just because your son or daughter chose not to go to school does not erode their rights compared to someone who chose to. IMO you are still dependent on your parents and should be insurable. This is an addressable issue***

My friend worked for the Peace Corps in Kenya and then for a non-profit in Ghana for a year. When he returned to the states last fall, he discovered that living in Africa for a certain period of time makes you uninsurable. He could not get coverage from any private healthcare provider, simply because he'd been living in Africa, doing charitable work.

Isolated. IMO, it should be addressed by Peace Corps. At the very least they should make people aware who volunteer of the facts. If you are aware and still choose to participate then it is conscious choice and not societies responsibility. If you were not made aware then the Peace Corps is responsible.

You mean like who can marry whom, or whether or not someone can have an abortion. Those kinds of freedoms of choice, or just economic?

Irrelevant to the current discussion. You are not being forced to marry someone of the same sex, nor are you being forced to have an abortion.

So she should go ahead and die? If you or anyone else believes this is okay I feel sorry for you. I can understand not being in favor of this bill or portions of it but are some of you past the point of human compassion that upi are accepting of death rather than a loss of profits? Not me and not the majority of folks who voted for Obama and many other Dems around the country.

Again, there are programs already in place for people in this situation.

I think I have posted somewhere else . . . then, take the profit incentive out.

You can't. No one would become a doctor. Want to see the best and brightest choose another profession....Cap their income.

Insurance is different than medical profession.

The medical profession is dependent on insurance, they are not inseparable.

It's so easy to be pragmatic when you don't live with the reality.

It's so easy to be pragmatic when you don't live with the reality.

Don't know if you're referring to me or not.

I live with reality.

I have 4 boys.

I came from Eastern Kentucky nothing.

Was the first person in my family to go to college. Also the first to graduate from college.

I have raised my boys to be independent and responsible. Have not given them what they want, only what they need. But, I have helped them learn how to obtain what they want.

I have 2 in college on full academic scholarships and have 2 more to go.

I am hoping that my generation does not turn over a worse country then I inherited. I fear they will be the first generation that will not be able to out do their parents.

It's so easy to be pragmatic when you don't live with the reality.

One more question.

Were the crafters of our constitution being pragmatic?

IMO the government has to be. An individual or group can deal with isolated incidents, but a government can't govern based on isolated incidents.

It's so easy to be pragmatic when you don't live with the reality.

I'm glad you are coming around.

People get sick and die.

There seem to be an awful lot of isolated incidents going around ...

I am not in favor of give aways at all. As the saying goes, I am not in favor of a hand out but I am in favor of giving a hand up. I see the health care bill as a hand up, not a hand out.

How about you pay for her treatment? It will obviously bankrupt you but you sure don't seem to mind bankrupting the insurance companies that millions of others depend on.

A classic "until it happens to me or someone in my family" response. People don't depend on insurance companies anymore, they may think they do but they are at the mercy of them. Things like getting a major illness and having your coverage dropped because you forgot to list having your tonsils removed as a child on your initial application. I wouldn't mind paying for it with my taxes and the more and more I read about it I wouldn't mind a single-payer system at all. The older Tea Partier's seem to like it with their signs and all. "Keep your government hands off my medicare"

A classic worse case senerio used as a scare tatic. Yes, I feel for TB&G's friend but you can't risk the care of millions because of one. If my insurance company were to go bankrupt paying benefits that were above and beyond their contractural obligations where does that leave me and my family? or the million other family's that depend on them? You have to make hard choices that could hurt a few for the good of the majority.

Is it a scare tactic since it's actually happened? You don't have to worry about that scenario if Health care is considered a right and not a privilage. I seriously believe that we have a human obligation in this country that people have access to medical care. Sorry I can't be the hard core social Darwinist some of you are.

Folks, you don't have a right for someone else to buy you anything.

Correct, rights end at the pocketbook of someone else.

Folks, you don't have a right for someone else to buy you anything.

AMEN, :thumb:

Here is my thing, I pay roughly $150 a month for my insurance and it is only myself on it but I also purchased the plan where there is no deductible besides on MRI, Ultrasounds, X-Rays (I only have to pay $75 once for any 3 of these things then I do not have to pay the deductible again). I could have paid for the lesser plans for like $40 or $50 per pay period but I did not. Come April 1 I have to pay $100 for the ER compared to $75 right now. I had major surgery and did not pay a dime for it. Even if I had to pay $200 a month for this insurance I would. If it meant I had to cut things out of my life to afford health insurance I would. With this said, even if I could not afford health insurance I would never expect someone else to pay for me, NEVER. Everyone can say we pay for the uninsured when they go to the hospital. Well so be it but I am not paying for 32 million people.

I am just tired of all of this. There is no reason why the government should be in my or anyone else's healthcare business. This is going to bankrupt this country.

For those who SUPPORT this bill, can you please explain to me, how is this country not intruding into your life when they are mandating when certain tests should be and not be done (ie Mammograms), how is this government going to be able to afford this bill, and how can they mandate someone to buy this insurance when it is their right to have insurance or not?

After all of the debate on this law, (I won't call it a bill any longer since it has passed) how can people still not know what is in it? Please show me where the law mandates that you have a certain test. Please show me where it mandates anyone to have a mammogram. What the law does do is mandate that insurance plans PAY for certain tests. Every time another false charge is made about what the bill does or does not do I feel better about it. If false charges and indistinct platitudes (socialism, stealing, death of freedom)are the best anyone can do, it must be pretty good.
