The BOK Center is a magnificent facility and I heard only raves from the players and coaches who participated in the tournament directly last year. They loved playing there.

 

However, the atmosphere last year, compared to the atmosphere this year at the Mason County Fieldhouse......there is no comparison!!

I would guess a crowd in excess of 5000 tonite in the Fieldhouse. Bands playing, fans cheering, bodies packed close to each other...it brought back a lot of fond memories.

 

Last year, I really don't think the crowd was as big...if it was, it was swallowed up by the much-bigger arena.

 

I simply think the BOK Center, though a great facility, just doesn't have the same ambiance of either the Fieldhouse or the Montgomery Co. facility.

 

The atmoshphere tonight, and thorughout the tournament, is what has made the 10th Region Tournament second to none among regional tournaments in this state.

 

The 10th Region Tournament was played at the BOKC last year because we could. It was the 37th District's turn to host, the BOKC was brand new, and we didn't have to travel to get there.

 

I've said it befoe and will say it again - The BOKC isn't high school and sure as haites isn't the 10th Region. The Fieldhouse is the 10th Region regardless of having "to park in the mud," eat bad popcorn, sit cheek to cheek on wood bleachers, and give the Royals the home court advantage. Maybe that's the charm of it. It was great to be back at the Fieldhouse even though we got beaten by the "home" team. We sure did better there than we did playing the Royals at the 94 foot BOKC last spring.

Clark had the chance to pick the bench they wanted,NOBODY put them there COACH HUMPHERY chose to take that bench...Same went for Pendleton..

 

Not sure that is accurate for Pendleton.

 

Coach Simms told me he emailed Mason early in the week and indicated no change would be made.

I attended almost everygame last year at BOK. Explain to me how the 10th played second fidle? I didn't see a difference other than one played before the other. These are the 'homer' statements and apparent overall attitude of the Mason County tourney committee that has placed them behind the times. Unfortunately, I didn't get to attend the finals this year but the semi-finals atmosphere was equally entertaining at BOK. The 9th finals this year was awesome except for the blowout but that didn't stop the Newport section from having a great time. Tell them how bad BOK is... LOL. These comments just don't hold it. Believe me, I owe neither location so I'm about as neutral as they get. Love HS basketball and can tell you the Fieldhouse has lost its charm. Sorry to break the news but a bigger and better arena is now in town.

But if you are from a school that has long been in the 10th Region, there is no other place for the 10th Region to be than in the Fieldhouse.

 

I am sure when the new Louisville arena is built, they will push for the state tournament and it will be held in Louisville. It will be a good tournament and those kids who get to play in it will always have a great memory.

 

BUT, it will not be the same as walking onto the floor of Rupp Arena.

 

Just won't and no matter what Louisville does, it will miss the mystic of walking onto the floor of Rupp like Goose Givens did, Kyle Macy touched his socks, Sky Walker dominated, Rex soared, Pitino coached, etc, etc.

 

Same as no matter what Montgomery Co and BOK does, it cannot match the pure mystic of the Fieldhouse for those schools that have been in the 10th for a long, long time.

I would have much preferred to have watched the final in the BOK instead of the Fieldouse last night. It is always as hot as oven, packed shoulder to shoulder, uncomfortable seats and the facilities are antique. We could have had the same size crowd (if the Mason fans will travel with the same numbers) and a whole lot more comfort at the BOK. I attended all sessions last year at the BOK and never got the feeling the 10th was just the warm-up act for the 9th. It is time to join the 21st century and move on to an arena. Everyone has their memories of the Fieldhouse and that is great. People still have memories of UK playing in Memorial, but they surived the change to Rupp and if they build a new downtown arena, they will survive that. Change isn't bad it's just a chance to do it differently and create new memories.

The upper bracket is the home team. There shouldn't be a choice. Mason is the tournament site, but it isn't the MCIT. The venue should be the same for every team. Home team sits on the bench by the stage with their fans behind the scorer's table. Guest team sits on the other end with their fans on the opposite side.

 

There were 2 games in this tournament where Mason fans (and most importantly - the student section - should have been on the opposite side of the gym.

 

Coach Humphrey shouldn't have to choose if he thinks it would be better for his team to sit where they drew or give that up so Mason could sit where they are most comfortable.

 

I'm with you guys that the Fieldhouse is an incredible place to play the tournament and the atmosphere tonight was just awesome. However, this was a bush league decision that was made by the Mason administration. It was wrong, unfair and bias toward the home team. I'm not taking away anything from the Mason Co. team. They earned the win.

 

That being said, if I'm Coach Humphrey and I know I can't get the host to run the tournament seating in a fair and equitable way, I would have chosen the other bench.

 

Post above is great. States that the FH is a great venue. Everybody follows the same rules. No choices, period.

Not arguing the fieldhouse point, but old timers need to know that the kids that play today were not born when Goose Givens played, and they only know Kyle Macy as the failed coach at Morehead State.

You know, you could turn back the clock to 1979 when Rupp Arena hosted its first state tournament, and in your quote, replace where you type Louisville (in bold) with Lexington, and replace where you type Rupp Arena (in bold)with Freedom Hall, and you would hear the argument that was made back then when the state tourney went to Lexington after the long run it was in Louisville. I remember people were complaining because Lexington didnt have the hotels surrounding the KFEC like Louisville did, so everyone wasnt staying in the same place. People got used to it, and it didnt take long for Rupp Arena to become "the place".

 

Back to the topic- I went to numerous 10th regional tournaments during my childhood and teen years at the Fieldhouse, and went to last year's first round and finals at NKU (missed the Montgomery Co edition), and the atmopshere was better at Mason. But, I also dont see anything wrong with spreading it around every now and then, either. I think the tourney experience would improve over time at the BOKC as well.

After sitting the Mason Co student section behind the opposing team's bench in both the semi-finals and the finals I'd guess that some coaches and AD's might not be as inclined to return to the Fieldhouse. This year was Pendleton/Harrison district's turn to host and Pendleton is treated like a red-headed step child with the student section/bench issue. I wouldn't be surprised if that district doesn't do something different next time around (BOK? Montgomery? Use Mason Co but have a district rep be in charge instead of the Mason administration?)

I wish PaNDA had taken a pic of the Mason student section directly behind GRC's bench tonight. The students were leaning over the bench players and coaching staff to point and yell. It would have been as easy to tell that the placement was the wrong call as the video of the Franklin Co - Henry Clay shot.

I was just saying that GRC did have the chance to switch benches and didn't so therefore, it's there own fault. If you have the chance to switch and don't I don't wanna hear it. :deadhorse::thumb:

Did you read the post? I said if I were GRC I would have taken the other bench but that doesn't change the fact that they SHOULD NOT HAVE HAD TO CHOOSE IN THE FIRST PLACE.
