Really?

 

I took it has Coach Knight implying that he does not agree with the rule that coaches get X amount of time before they have to put another player into the game. Something along the lines of "why give a team time to regroup after they just committed a foul?"

I have attended many, many, I mean many clinics over the years and there isn't a better presenter that I have seen like Bobby Knight. He breaks the game into details, for example, he talks about why teams lose. 1. Missing your box out assighnment 2. Poor shot selection 3. Fouling a jump shooter that shoots a bad shot. 4. Throwing the ball away. 5. Missing a defensive assignment. There are several more that he collaborates. Listening to him speak and illistrate on the floor or film room, those are things that a lot of people don't think about. Plus, when you win 3 national championships that is enough said right there. I love to listen to him on ESPN, he just has a different approach to the game than anyone else.

I had a conversation about strategy with Coach Andy Kennedy one day for about 30 minutes, we never had another. People at that level know so much more than close followers of the game it's not funny. I use to think I knew a lot about basketball, I've now conceded that most all major coaches know way more than I ever will. In 30 minutes he analyzed things that I would have never even thought about, and talked about things I barely understood.

I am the one who made that statement. It is a figure of speech. I must have really struck a nerve by making that comment. And I am not a fan of him, but respect what he did in his career. And I will NEVER claim that I know more about the game than him.

 

You are right though, ... scouting, recruiting, and coaching for the number of years Knight has doesn't really mean anything at all. :ohbrother:

 

I do agree 110% with Swamprat that he is out of his element as an announcer.

 

I know it's a figure of speech, but there is a reason why it is said. It's not that the comment struck a nerve with me, but I don't think it's accurate, figure of speech or not.

Knight, whom I have never liked, is very knowledgeable and accomplished as a coach. THAT was my point. I didn't literally mean that he forgot more than any of us know about the game, ... but I would put his knowledge of the game against anyone on here. That was my only point. :ohbrother:

I don't care which one you pick, Knight, Coach Cal, Roy Williams, Coach K, Jamie Dixon, Pitino, etc., they would drown most of the best HS coaches in the country in knowledge and coaching ability.

Before becoming an assistant for a year or two, Frank Martin was a high school head coach.

 

He went from high school head coach to DI head coach in a span of four years.

 

You think Knight would coach circles around him?

 

I'm not saying he is as talented as Knight, but it's stupid to think someone with equal talent could not beat Knight, or most coaches, for that matter.

I'm not saying he is as talented as Knight, but it's stupid to think someone with equal talent could not beat Knight, or most coaches, for that matter.

 

Actually he was a college assistant for 7 years (4 with Northeastern, 2 with UC, and 1 with Kansas State). He coached under Huggie for 2 years so it's not like he went straight from HS to being a Head Coach. As far as overall knowledge and coaching ability goes he has a long way before he can touch Bobby Knight. Doesn't Knight's resume speak for itself.

 

As for the original question in the thread it would be insane to think that anyone on here even comes close to holding a candle to Knight's overall knowledge of the game. Great NCAA & Pro coaches make a living off of their sport, and they are learning and studying the game all day-nearly every day. HS coaches often have other responsibilities, limits on how much you can realistically practice or watch film, etc. and usually have some sort of a life away from the game. So yes, IMO, Knight has forgotten more about basketball than you, I, or anyone else on here could ever hope to know.

 

The man has won 3 National Titles, been to 5 Final Fours, 11 Conference Titles, and over 900 games on the Division 1 level, but he doesn't know more than the average fan on BGP?:idunno: When Cal retires or leaves we'll just hire one the HS coaches in the state who've had alot of success since that's the smart thing to do.

I think he was a college guy, but I could be wrong. But creating an offense doesn't put you at the level of a guy like Knight or Coach K IMO. The guys who invented the A-11 offense in football aren't hailed in the same light as Bill Belicheck are they?
