Has Bob Knight forgotten more basketball than I know?

Featured Replies

I read a statement in another thread earlier today that I have seen many times involving different people and different subjects.

"...Bob Knight has forgotten more basketball than most of us know..."

Maybe I don't get the full meaning behind this. What about Bob Knight makes him more knowledgeable about basketball over someone who follows basketball very closely, but isn't necessarily a Hall of Fame coach?

Over the casual viewer, I understand. But just because Bob Knight has won 902 games doesn't make him any more knowledgeable about the sport than someone who has won 200 games, or who scouts or plays basketball, does it?

In last nights game somebody from OU fouled out and all the players were huddled around Capel and Knight said what is this Timeout for?

Knight still doesn't know what is a travel and what isn't a travel.

Knight knows more about X's and O's than ANY person that is not a successful coach. If you follow basketball closely or not, you will not know X's and O's like he does. That being said, I have him on ESPN.

He forgot to show up in Lexington a few weeks ago.....

What x's and o's is there to know?

There will be plenty of times, both under Calipari, Gillispie, and Tubby that I could tell you the play they were going to run before they ever ran it...

Announcing is out of his element, that's obvious. However, I would give anything, to sit down and talk basketball with Bobby Knight.

I can agree with that. I like to talk to people who actually know the game of basketball, other than at face value [He can dunk well; he can shoot it].

I am the one who made that statement. It is a figure of speech. I must have really struck a nerve by making that comment. And I am not a fan of him, but respect what he did in his career. And I will NEVER claim that I know more about the game than him.

You are right though, ... scouting, recruiting, and coaching for the number of years Knight has doesn't really mean anything at all. :ohbrother:

I do agree 110% with Swamprat that he is out of his element as an announcer.

Bob Knight knows more about basketball than any of us on here, possibly combined. It is one thing to understand basketball, defensive and offensive strategy but it would have to be a different animal to actually being able to coach it, make adjustments, and the little things that HOF NCAA & NBA coaches do at a high level. Bob Knight would talk circles around anyone on here as far as overall basketball knowledge goes as far as I'm concerned. That said, he might not be the best at talking to a National audience on TV, but realistically Bob Knight has spent most of his waking hours learning, coaching, & talking about college basketball so I'd say he has a great deal of knowledge and thinks about things way more in depth than even the most hardcore fan could.

Would Bill Bellicheck be able to embarrass any of us if we had a debate over football? Without a doubt, no questions asked. I think we have to remember that coaches turned TV analyst have to dumb the game down some (okay alot) to be able to get their point across to the audience as a whole, Bob Knight has a hard time with that IMO. Guys like Gruden are good at it, Knight not so much.

He was being sarcastic.

He was being sarcastic.

Really?
