March 3, 201016 yr Knight was rarely known to have the most talented team, ... even in some of his title runs. Let me say by stating that Knight has to have a high Basketball intelligence or he would not have been so successful. But he was known for losing with "the most talented of teams" as well as succeed with the "least talented of teams." 1975 IU was the best in the nation by far. But they lost to UK (a team they had drubbed by 24 in December.). 1980 IU was a 2 seed I think when they were upset by Purdue in the Sweet 16. A Boilermaker team they had handled in the Big 10. 1993 IU was ranked #1 going into the Tourney and lost in the Elite Eight to Kansas. I won't even mention Cleveland State among others. He was a great coach, knows a lot, but is human.
March 3, 201016 yr Author I think he was a college guy, but I could be wrong. But creating an offense doesn't put you at the level of a guy like Knight or Coach K IMO. The guys who invented the A-11 offense in football aren't hailed in the same light as Bill Belicheck are they? I think you're comparing their success to an average person. The guys that invented the A-11 didn't have Tom Brady or Peyton Manning. I understand you're opening up the topic with other sports, but I think professional sports is the last one you want to get to. Knight coached forty plus years, averaging out to about 21 wins per season. If Knight would have stopped ten years earlier and had 700 or so wins, would you think of him any different? Has someone like Mark Few or John Brady forgot more basketball? Just because you can successful teach people basketball or coach them, doesn't mean you are the most in-tune with that. Same goes for many things: teaching, for example. I've had plenty of teachers who honestly may have known too much for their own good and because of that, they could not teach worth a hoot. They knew answers to almost anything you asked, but could not teach it well. But I concede in this one. I have nothing else to add. :isurrender:
March 3, 201016 yr Author Actually he was a college assistant for 7 years (4 with Northeastern, 2 with UC, and 1 with Kansas State). He coached under Huggie for 2 years so it's not like he went straight from HS to being a Head Coach. As far as overall knowledge and coaching ability goes he has a long way before he can touch Bobby Knight. Doesn't Knight's resume speak for itself. As for the original question in the thread it would be insane to think that anyone on here even comes close to holding a candle to Knight's overall knowledge of the game. Great NCAA & Pro coaches make a living off of their sport, and they are learning and studying the game all day-nearly every day. HS coaches often have other responsibilities, limits on how much you can realistically practice or watch film, etc. and usually have some sort of a life away from the game. So yes, IMO, Knight has forgotten more about basketball than you, I, or anyone else on here could ever hope to know. The man has won 3 National Titles, been to 5 Final Fours, 11 Conference Titles, and over 900 games on the Division 1 level, but he doesn't know more than the average fan on BGP?:idunno: When Cal retires or leaves we'll just hire one the HS coaches in the state who've had alot of success since that's the smart thing to do. :notworthy: Whatever you say. A lot more goes into coaching than just knowing x's and o's, that's pretty obvious. Cal is here for one reason, and that's because he gets the best of the best. He would not have near the success he had at Memphis if he had Michael Porter or Edgar Sosa running the point. I am not downgrading his accomplishments - I am looking at them in an overall perspective knowing that he had three titles in 43 or so years. Consequently, I'm not saying I, or anyone here, knows more about the the x's and o's of the game. But to think some of us are vastly inferior to Knight in the knowledge of basketball is just poo. How much more does Knight know compared to Billy Donovan, who has two titles and is winning at a higher clip than Knight did?

Dude once again if you think you know as much about Bob Knight about BBall you may want to check yourself into a mental institution. That's laughable man. :notworthy: Whatever you say. How much more does Knight know compared to Billy Donovan, who has two titles and is winning at a higher clip than Knight did? I'm not just arguing for Knight. I'm arguing for all elite coaches. They know more about their sport than anyone on here by a large margin, and I don't see how it's up for debate. Do you honestly think you could have an indepth conversation about basketball with Bobby Knight if he was trying to embarrassyou with his knowledge? Because that's what it's about. Not Billy D, Frank Martin, etc. The answer to your original question in the thread IMO is that yes, Bob Knight has forgot more about basketball than most (IMO all of us) on BGP have ever known.
March 3, 201016 yr Also you mentioned 3 titles in 43 years like it's nothing. My God man. How many National Championships and Final Fours have you coached in? Three is as many titles as Pitino, Coach Cal and Billy Donovan combined. How many other coaches have that many, especially in the modern era?
March 3, 201016 yr Author Also you mentioned 3 titles in 43 years like it's nothing. My God man. How many National Championships and Final Fours have you coached in? Three is as many titles as Pitino, Coach Cal and Billy Donovan combined. How many other coaches have that many, especially in the modern era? Do you even read the entire posts? I never said that I believe to know as much as Knight - I don't. I don't believe to know as much as any coach. But to act like Knight has actually forgotten (figure of speech, I know) more basketball than some of us is just plain ludicrous. He coached twenty years after winning his last title. It's not like he dominated the sport. He coached over forty years, probably twice the age of you. In that time, he got three titles. Yes, three titles is amazing. Billy Donovan has coached all of 15 years and has two. Izzo is close in the Final Four category. He never had over 23 wins in his final 15 or so seasons. His ego is so large that he had to stay to become the all-time leaders in wins. If Knight would have quit ten years ago, even with his three titles, I bet you don't make the same argument for him. Once again, I never claimed to be on the level of Knight, but just because he had 15 mediocre seasons after his last title to catapult him into the all-time wins slot, everyone acts like he invented basketball. Consequently, this thread is about Knight - not all of the other elite coaches. I compared him to Donovan, etc., to prove a point that Knight doesn't walk on water.
March 3, 201016 yr Author I thought you had nothing else to add??? :idunno: I hoped that would mean no one would respond to my final statement. But they did. So I did. :isurrender: I am glad, however, that your input on this topic was just to point that out.

March 3, 201016 yr I will no longer use figures of speech that can be taken as literal in their meaning. This is all my fault and I am sorry. I will add one more sidenote. This was VERY painful for me to defend Bobby Knight, who I truly do not like at all.

This was VERY painful for me to defend Bobby Knight, who I truly do not like at all. I can agree with you on that one. In all seriousness, I wasn't taking your figure of speech as literal. The thread in itself was also in used in that method. I honestly didn't feel that you thought he had forgotten more than we know. I just think people overvalue his, or other coaches, knowledge over someone who may not be a coach, but is an avid fan (more than just a fan who watches games).
March 4, 201016 yr And avid fan (more than just a fan who watches games) doesn't know jack about basketball compared to Bob Knight. I can't believe you are serious. The whole argument makes me laugh.
March 4, 201016 yr Author And avid fan (more than just a fan who watches games) doesn't know jack about basketball compared to Bob Knight. I can't believe you are serious. The whole argument makes me laugh. Good thing it's over. But I will add this - by avid fan, I don't mean someone who just watches the game, or even someone who can call out the offense and defense and suggest plays. But case closed. I'm glad I could bring you laughter today.
March 4, 201016 yr Yeah, I think you explained that already. BTW, it was over before it started, SSF.
