On a related note, I've been told that when Mason County High School was created, princilap Elza Whalen ruled with an iron fist. They say that he didn't want to see letterman's jackets from the small high schools that were consolidated; felt that it would undermine the new school's unity.

 

Rusty Ryan was telling me last week that the first time the boys from Orangeburg, Minerva and Mays Lick had basketball practice that the boys stood in groups of their former schools. Mr Teence Ryan was their coach and told them that now boys, we are one, not three. Rusty was on that team and was Coach Ryan's son.

I wasn't inferring that he personally had the arena built. More along the line of the crowds that wanted to see Mason County play back in the day.

It is a great facility, there is another gym in west KY at Calloway County Hight school that is almost identical to the fieldhouse. The difference there is that you walk in on the second level and go up or down to your seats. Gym and stage area is all the same.

 

I was told by our school officials that the state regulates everything you do in terms of building if you use bonds. If you have money to pay for it then that is different. I ahve been told a gym that would seat what the fieldhouse costs would be in the range of 10-11 million dollars today. Wonder what it Cost?

I remember when I was a kid that dad and my uncle took me to watch Morehead play Murray State in the Maysville gym. I remember him coaching at Tollesboro for 1 semester and then was called into the service.He was one strict teacher and coach. He ran Mason Co high school with a firm hand.

From what I've been told, yes he did. I had the pleasure of playing golf with him a couple of times a few years before he passed.

 

Played on Maysville High School's 1947 championship and 1948 runnerup trams and was all-conference in the OVC a couple of times as well.

Does Trimble have a comparable facility? By the waY, he said Trinity JV got pounded.

Trimble County has an older gym that I believe was built at their present middle school (?) thats bigger than the current HS gym, but its not comparable to the Mason Co Fieldhouse, from a seating standpoint.

The old Trimble Co. gym -- which is now the middle school gym, I think -- was decent sized and was used instead of the newer HS gym when TCHS hosted the district during my HS days 20 years ago. I think the old Trimble gym predates the '60s, though.

The fieldhouse at Mason Co was not open in 1964. They practiced in the old Washington gym and may have played some games there also. I remember the district was in the Maysville gym through the mid to late 60's.

The first game in the Fieldhouse was January 15, 1965 which is in the 64-65 season. The game was against Ripley, Oh. and I believe Fred Hester scored the first basket in the JV game. The first Kentucky team to play was, of course, who else but Maysville Bulldogs.
