Was very young when it was being built and eventually opened and was wondering how did the money and building of The Fieldhouse come about? How long did it take to build,etc.? Was there other considerations in its location from where it was eventually built? Was there opposition? Was the plan to build one of the biggest high school gyms in the state? I could understand how a community the size of Mason County and Maysville and all of its resources now could build a gym like that , but how was it done back then? I don't understand why Montgomery Co didn't build one to equal the capacity of the Fieldhouse ,although they also have a nice facility.

Was told by our adm. that the state will only let you build to a certain maximum. The same capacity as Montgomery Co has . To build larger, you have to have private funding.

Must have not been the case back in the early 60's when Mason built their's. Times change and Government rules change. I wonder if Clark Co had their bleachers all there and working ,how many would it seat.

I believe the construction company that built the Fieldhouse was called the East End Construction Company, but not 100% sure. Andy Mitchell was the owner.

I don't know; I didn't move to Maysville until 1979. What little I do know is due to the fact that I worked with Mr. Mitchell's daughter for about 25 years.

Thats correct and Bill Staton was the head forman for that project. East End Construction did most of the bigger projects at this time.

On a related note, I've been told that when Mason County High School was created, princilap Elza Whalen ruled with an iron fist. They say that he didn't want to see letterman's jackets from the small high schools that were consolidated; felt that it would undermine the new school's unity.

Yes they did. The vo-tech school was one of them, I'm pretty sure.
