Because he wasn't used to stretch the field. They tried to make him a #1 or #2, the Bengals will use him in the slot and he will be the deep guy.

Jones has never been one to "stretch the field." He is a possession-type WR whose best route has been a short slant. It'll be interesting to see what the Bengals do the address their needs for a burner WR, as they currently have none.

Jones will be used as a deep threat with his speed, and a guy that go in the middle and make a touch catch with his height. He is not the answer to all the Bengals needs at receiver, however this signing will end up being a real good signing IMO if they also get TO.

I never said it was a real big signing. I even said that just this signing alone is not going to fix things. If they think this signing will fix their passing problems, then that would just be dumb. It would be a good singing though, and worth the risk if they do say go out and get a TO as well.

Here's the thing with your thinking on signing guys like Henry, Stallworth and the Jones boys. I get the bargin basement thinking and the fact that the Bengals wouldn't take a big financial hit if they don't pan out. That's fine when they work out like the Benson signing. Its also fine to take a chance on a guy and cut him before the season or even during the season if he isn't productive. Here's where the Bengals have been, and will continue to be hurt by taking chances on so many bad seeds. Take Chris Henry, they chose to ignore his large amount of baggage and give him yet another chance. He didn't put up big numbers but by your own account he made a big difference in the passing game with his ability to stretch the field. However, his personal problems tragically overtook him and did him in. Even if he hadn't have lost his life they Bengals would have been forced to cut him or suspend him and it still would have had the negative impact on their passing game.

 

What happens if Jones, Jones and Stallworth all make the team and become starters and one or more of them run afoul of the rules again? The financial hit may not be big but how do you replace one of them midseason? You don't. That's why its not a good idea to have a roster full of second or third chance low character guys--eventually one of the ones that you're counting on will slip up and you don't usually find replacements for starters off the wavier wire in mid-season.

I was being a little sarcastic. But, just read all of this garbage. Jones and TO are going to combine with Chad to fix the Bengals passing problems. I've seen that a few times on here. Maybe you haven't said it, but it has been implied by others on here.

 

I get it man, you guys are Bengals fans. But only the Bengals would try to fix their problems with a guy that's been busted for Cocaine, a guy that can't stay out of the clubs and trouble, and a WR that is pushing 40 & who has lost a few steps. I don't see what's hard about that. The Bengals were a playoff team, they should be adding pieces to take the next step, not getting two guys who haven't played in a while because of suspensions and such, and getting a WR who is impossible to keep happy. Now that I do agree with. See if this is the only thing they plan on doing at receiver to help out the passing game, then I am definitely not fine with it. However I do believe they will do other things, that is why I think its a good move. He is someone that could maybe help out as a 3rd or 4th receiver and could be a down field threat they are missing and if anything just a big target for Palmer. Its a move that is worth taking IMO, and that is all I am trying to say. They do need to continue to look to improve at WR, and I think they should get TO because you are probably right they won't really try for Marshall. If they also get TO, and then have the draft coming up as well. Then I think the Bengals really will have improved the passing game very much.

 

Its the beginning of the off season, and its a good move to begin the off season. You act like that this is all that is going to happen, and everything else will stay the same now. The Bengals still could actually trade for Marshall, or the Bengals could end up signing TO. Either definitely would help out the passing problems some. Then you also have the draft, and if they sign TO they if they want they could use that first pick on a TE.

I've heard that Chad, TO, and Jones would be a heck of a group. I've also heard that Chad would keep TO quiet because the Bengals would be winning among other things.

 

I'm just waiting for the season. The Bengals were lucky this season that Pittsburgh was injured, and didn't have all the pieces they needed. Pitt will fix that this season IMO and the Bengals will only be competing with the Ravens for 2nd place in the division IMO. Believe what you want, history tells me that this will probably be no different.

Jones could end up being a decent third or fourth option.

 

TO would classify has an average #1 receiver but very good #2.

 

FC also says if they get TO, Jones AND draft well then the passing game will be improved, which I agree with. The Bengals had one reliable option last year.

 

I don't see what you are getting all worked up about? As a Bengals fan, am I glad that they go after problem guys? Nope. Just something I've learned to live it.
