I think we are extremely hard on officials. Every bad call is not someone being cheated. I think that fans are often way too hard on the officials and the ones who generally are have never put on the stripes and seen what it is like and would never last if they did. It is a very difficult job, ... and a thankless job. Do it right, you never hear a word. Make a mistake or even a 'perceived mistake' and you will get reemed, called a cheater, etc.

 

Just like in any profession, there are good ones and there are bad ones. The good ones can have bad nights and even the bad ones can have good nights.

 

Rest assured, that no matter how good a crew calls a game, ... if it is a close game, someone will blame them.

Thanks. I was going thru threads in the HS and college basketball forums and in most of them, the officials are being criticised. Even by fans of the winning teams. I agree there are bad calls in nearly every game. It happens. Players and coaches make mistakes, so do officials. But apparently, the officials aren't permitted that luxury. It happens, and more often than not there is no intent to cheat anyone. Just a mistake.

Ego is what worries me about some referees. I think some of them don't understand that the best referees are not really noticed during a game. I hate when a referee continues to have conversations with coaches or players. When a situation occurs there friendly banter has now opened up the flood gates.

 

Once again let me say I wouldn't have there job.

Depends on the ref, IMO. Some deserve worse than what they get.

 

 

I totally agree. I'm sure it's not local to just one region, but there's one in the 8th that don't get enough comments. Absolutely brutal. He'll stare you down to intimidate the player or coach.

:eek:Sounds to me like you were maybe talking about yourself, if so its good you are a former high school referee, a small percentage may be this way but its very, very small. As others have said I feel most officals let the comments from coaches and fans (if not personal) roll of their back like water off a duck. I always thought it would be a real site to let the fans with the loudest mouths call just one half of a game and video it. I'm sure it would make America's funniest videoes. Officals have a hard job at best, I sure wouldn't want it.

Was this at St. Catherine's in Ft. THomas during the summer. Because I saw a ref do that in a game my child was playing and let the woman go up and down the court for about 5 minutes. I asked the ref if he wanted me to yell at her like she was yelling at him and he said no.

We have officials in our region that called myself and all the other coaches in the region a couple days before the ratings were supposed to happen and actually ask for a #1 rating from us to make sure they made the regional tourney or the state tourney and some of the coaches did and some of us didn't, but don't say they don't talk about it, if they didn't care about moving up and calling the big games, they wouldn't do it. Most do it because they love the game and want to be in the big game, for the same reasons we coach and our players play. So it is talked about very much.

 

And I agree with the officials talking about the good and the bad players on the way to the game and what they have done in the past and seen them do, how they act, and that goes for us coaches too. If a coach has a short fuse, I'm sure the officials know about it and are ready for it. coaches scout and officials talk to other officials for the same reason we scout, because they don't want to be surprised. It's all part of the job. And I admit we are too hard on officials, we always want perfection and know it's not possible, they are only human.

lMAO that is some funny stuff, but over all yes people are to hard on the officials, Just because we see something from our angle in the stands doesn't mean they saw the same thing from the angle they have five feet from the play and we are fifty feet away.:idunno:

Basketball officials do not make anywhere close to what they to equal the abuse they take. A lot of quality officials move on for those reasons every year.

Two calls that drive me up the wall are the blown jump stop call and calling a walk when a player catches the pass and initates the dribble. Both feet are on the ground when the ball is caught but the walking violation is called. Once in a while you can actually see a shuffle but most of the time one would need an electron microscope to see if the atoms are sliding over each other at the sub atomic level or something! Other times a player actually takes off, making a stride or even a step plus and nothing gets called. I think a lot of it is just the ally ally home free, safe ground, type of call they can make because they have seen other refs doing the same thing.

My pet peeve is when some mental "heavyweight" is screaming "call it both ways and screaming 9-2 in fouls" and pointing to the scoreboard when his team is playing an aggressive trapping defense while the other team is backed up in a passive 2-3 zone. Some coaches encourage the crowd behavior by ranting and raving at the referee from the opening horn in an attempt to intimidate and get an edge.

Oh cry me a river! You don't see football officials responding to screams from the crowd so why should the basket officials? They're paid to do a job and if they don't like the pay; then get another job! Good or bad officiating, they should never allow the fans to interpret how they call the game. If I pay to see a game (and officials are part of the game) and I don't like a call, I'll be more than happy to say so. A good official is one that has a thick skin and controls the game itself, not the fans. So learn to take the harsh and obnoxious criticism and continue calling your game whether you're good at it or not.JMO

I think we are in most cases. People always want to get on to the refs and blame them. But I do believe that there are refs out there who really cheat. Go to a game at Clay Co, at Corbin, at Hazard or Perry Central, at Lexington Catholic, at schools in Louisville, etc with certain refs. You will get cheated. Not always, it just depends on the crew. But cheating goes on so some guys deserve getting yelled at and ridiculed as much as possible. But for the most part people are too hard on refs.

 

Thats just my opinion.

 

I agree with this remark. I, as well, have also seen referees where there are consistent calls made where the impartiality of the referee could be called into question. Maybe or maybe not cheating...but definitely a bias.
