Miami running back Brandon Gainer signs LOI to UK

Featured Replies

I looked at this stow away recruit in the 2010 UK class and I could not figure out how Kentucky got him to sign a National Letter of Intent.

He is from Miami, Florida, he did not list UK as a potential school on his Rivals.com site, nor did he take an official visit to the University of Kentucky.

What was the connection?

Come to find out, Brandon Gainer was coached and mentored at Miami Central High School by none other than former UK and Miami Dolphin running back Mark Higgs. Higgie played with Joker Phillips at UK in the middle 1980's.

Nice pick up for UK. Congratulations to Coach Phillips. Thanks Higgie!

Gainer is the #15 rated RB in the Nation and a top 30 prospect in Florida by most of the ranking services.

Has he qualified? Blows my mind we were able to get such a talent...

Looks like he might have been a stowaway by former UK great Mark Higgs.

Who all had offered this guy? Size? 40? Has he qualified?

It sounds like he is not a burner but is quick. Sounds as if he is more of a down hill runner who gets better as the game goes on.

He had offers from Florida State, Oregon, South Florida, Texas Tech, North Carolina, Central Florida, and Louisville.

Good list of schools..

UCF was suppose to be the front runner. I don't think FSU was too serious about him, I think they've taken backs the last few years that they like better.

Either way it's a sick pickup for UK. My jaw hit the floor when I saw he committed.

He almost sounds like a Simpson style runner with maybe a lil more quickness is that right?

I think they are kind of similar. Gainer is probably the faster of the two. I haven't really watched Simpson that much so your guess is as good as mine though.

A top 30 recruit in the state of Florida means he is a very good Football player and an extremely good signee for Coach Phillips and the Wildcats.

To me, Simpson and Gainer sound similar.

Gainer's analysis from Sout.com (5'11" 200lbs, 4.5)

Strengths: Power, Size, Tackle-Breaking Ability

Areas for improvement: Breakaway Speed, Change-of-Direction

Gainer is a between-the-tackles, downhill runner who gets better as the game wears on. He's always falling forward on his runs and breaks a lot of tackles inside. He doesn't have home-run speed and won't make a whole lot of people miss but he's been one of the state's most productive backs over the last few years playing in one of the toughest areas. -- Mike Bakas

Simpson's analysis from Scout.com (6'2" 190 4.55)

Strenghts: Block Ability, Tackle Breaking Ability and Toughness

Areas for improvement: Elusiveness

Productive high school back who did a little bit of everything. He's a bigger back and a tough runner. He runs through arm tackles and gets yards after contact. Has above average speed and a nice burst, but does not have a ton of wiggle to his game. He shows ability as a blocker and receiver out of the backfield. - Allen Trieu
