I can't answer that. I've never had the occasion to "hear a call." However, I would bet that if you talked to someone who did they would tell you its a bit more than the proverbial gut feeling.

Its funny you ask that. When he was on the air with DP he equated starting the priesthood as being in rookie ball. If we want to do the comparison lets go with Pope = HOF.

I would have gone with the list of canonized saints as the Catholic Hall of Fame, but you don't have to be a priest, nun, or brother to be canonized. Pope seems like a good way to go.

 

 

My personal opinion, hearing a calling isn't like having a switch turned on in your head. I also don't believe that people have only one thing they can do with their lives. The Church always needs the best and brightest from among her numbers to serve as religious leaders and this guy made a decision to serve in that capacity. It is a decision that he will have to reexamine over and over again for the rest of his life. Maybe he'll even come to regret it.

 

I always personally believed that for Catholics, religious life was the default position. When I had reached a certain age, my thought process went something like: "If I think I can be a good priest, then I should become a priest. If I do not think I can be a good priest, then I'll do whatever else I'm capable of." It's possible that this man thought the same way I do.

 

 

And Jim, I think "God-given talent" is a phrase that describes a genetic predisposition to certain physical characteristics along with a great deal of practice and preparation. If I had a scrap of athletic ability, I don't think God would really care if I had played pro basketball or go to medical school. I know we're in a sports forum but, in the end, it's only baseball. Like Moonlight Graham said in Field of Dreams: "Son, if I'd only gotten to be doctor for five minutes... now that would have been a tragedy."

That sounds convenient enough. Supposing the hearer isn't quite sure? Perhaps he doesn't share with his friends the strange voices in his head?
