Wow, lots of memories floating back now.

 

Taylors Pool Hall was my favorite downtown hangout. As long as you just shot your game and didn't mess with the townies, life was good. They sold burgers and fries and not much of anything else except cold beer. The bathroom was basically a shower stall with a drain in the floor, LOL.

 

 

The Barber Chair, lol. I hope it is enshrined somewhere.

 

Anyone else have great memories of that Richmond institution, Ma Kelly's restaurant? What a place. There should be a separate thread just to discuss Ma Kelly's. :thumb:

 

I also fondly remember meals from Paco's, B & B Deli, Ritzy's and Sub Center.

 

I played a lot of golf at Arlington GC

 

Lake Reba was dry but we fished at Wilgreen Lake and Silver Creek (really good wade fishing for smallmouth)

 

Loved just spending an afternoon in the Ravine. I hope it is still there.

 

Wow. I had forgotten all about Ma Kelly's. Seriously, there could not have been anywhere on the planet that you could have gotten more food for $2.50. I am quite certain I would have died of malnutrition had that place not existed my junior and senior years when I lived off campus and any extra money I had went for . . . um, liquid nourishment.

 

Played a lot of golf at Arlington. If I recall correctly, with your student ID card it was $3 for 9 holes and $5 for 18. About 3 years after I graduated, my fraternity (Phi Delts) were forever banned from there as a result of some stupid things done during an alumni outing (I was not part of the stupidness for a change). I assume I'm still banned . . . . :lol:

 

There was also a bar across from Southern Hills Plaza that we frequented on occasion. Can't remember the name. Might have had a "Bananas" in it? Very fun place.

Bear and Bull! Forgot about that one. Pretty certain it's long since gone now also. Dupree and Todd (or maybe just one of them) is an all-Greek dorm now. My junior year lived in Southern Hills apartments and there are still there and senior year lived in a pretty nice townhouse on Arlington GC. Got to believe that Richmond East apartments have been bulldozed to the ground by now!

 

Pikes were good athletes (and partyers) when I was down there. How did you get into that one??? :sssh:

 

 

Actually there was a time when I WAS an acceptable facsimile of an athlete. And besides, at the time the Pikes were low on numbers so I got in just under the wire. Actually, back then, Pikes were pretty centralized on the 9th floor of Dupree. At least I think it was the ninth floor. It's been a uh . . . year or two since those days.

 

And yes, Ma Kelly's was an absolute Godsend for 90% of the students I knew. Well, that and the Thrifty Dutchman . . .

Don't leave out T-Bom's. Took upside Margaritas in the famous barber chair. Still recall that "top shelf" tequila they used. Yumm..............

I didn't spend much time downtown as a college student at EKU. But I know the guy that owns the Paddy Wagon, so if you ever have a chance to go there, I would. It's a nice place.

 

As for EKU, I could tell you a few good Criminal Justice professors, but I don't remember many of my general education professors.

 

Try using ratemyprofessor.com. It always worked for me, and I never really had a bad experience with a professor at EKU. Oh, and take the Traffic Safety (I think the initials when you search to add are TRS) that is called "Motorcycle Safety" or something similar. It's a 100 level class, and I believe it counts as a Gen Ed. You get to ride motorcycles most of the class and it's an easy A. Oh and you get a little card that will allow you to get your motorcycle license.

 

It's a good school...but make sure you don't get too out of control. I saw some guys my freshman year that partied way too much and never went to class and they weren't there my sophomore year.

She usually had fried chicken, meat loaf, salmon patties, soupbeans and cornbread, mashed taters, corn, macaroni, among other items....mostly country cooking. And plenty of desserts. Milk, tea, and cola were the drinks, and from very large plastic cups. All for not much more than 2 bucks. We went literally through her kitchen and loaded up on what we wanted, then one of her workers would come to your table, give a look at what you had, and tell you the cost. You might have the same as your buddy next to you, but if your slice of meat loaf was a bit larger than his you would pay a few cents more.

Her clone ran the exact same place in Bowling Green in the 70's. I ate at Ma Kelly's a time or two on visits to Richmond. Awesome.

Ma Kelly's has been gone for several years. I think most of the pubs are too, or have different names.

Went to EKU in the late 70's and worked at The Dog and frequented the Bear and Bull, O'Reilly's, Sutters and Poopyatzee's (sp?). Was on campus last year and couldn't find my way around so much has changed. Was a Pike and truly loved my years there. Lived in Dupree Hall for awhile and then moved out to Richmond East Apartments. I wonder if they even still exist? Got a great education, left there way too soon.

 

Richmond East Apts are still there but the last time I saw them they seemed pretty dilapidated and were not the best place to live or hang out at. Senator Worley has bought up most of downtown, especially First Street, and is building office buildings. So, "downtown" is not like it was back when you and I were there.
