My wife went there a few years ago before we were married, always go to the McDonald's by the mall the one right off the interstate is awful! Other than that it's a fun place. If you are planning on sticking around on weekend might try going greek, not many non greeks on campus on weekends from what I saw.

Even needs need love from sorority girls.

Keep in mind those partying opportunities exist at pretty much every school. It's what you make of it individually. I had a high school buddy that went to Miami University and cranked out a 1.0 GPA his first semester. Besides being threatened by his parents, he was put on academic probation. Realizing that college was not really the thing for him, he buckled down and got a 0.0 the second semester. Technicially, he didn't even get that because he never showed up to a single class and got nothing but incompletes. That ended his college career. He now works in landscaping. And isn't the owner of the landscaping company, either.

I think EKU's reputation as a party school has been greatly diminished since I attended. Back then we were actually ranked in Playboy magazine. I acknowledge my role in helping create that ranking. :sssh: Half of UK showed up to Richmond on Thursday nights. Friday mornings were generally painful. Apparently things have greatly changed since those times.

I had my fair share of fun times as well, but I didn't do it with greeks. I partied with friends and friends of friends . Usually hung out with the EKU golf team, because my roommate was on the team.

We had some great times but like you said, it's all up to you as to whether or not you want to stay in school and graduate. You can party, but you have to be reasonable with it. The guys I referred to in my first post had less than a 1.0 their first semester. They are both in the military now, I believe. They were great guys, just didn't want to go to class. They wanted to stay in the dorm and party every single day.

Sure do, though it wasn't one of the more popular First Street bars when I went there. There was also a pool hall on First Street that we frequented quite a bit. And a bar at the end of the row (furthest away from main drag), but I can't recall the name of it right now. Ultimately, though, I spent a LOT of time at the Family Dog!

Me too. I worked for a rock band that use to play their too. We also went to O'Reilly's down the road. Good times. :thumb:

Went to EKU in the late 70's and worked at The Dog and frequented the Bear and Bull, O'Reilly's, Sutters and Poopyatzee's (sp?). Was on campus last year and couldn't find my way around so much has changed. Was a Pike and truly loved my years there. Lived in Dupree Hall for awhile and then moved out to Richmond East Apartments. I wonder if they even still exist? Got a great education, left there way too soon.

Bear and Bull! Forgot about that one. Pretty certain it's long since gone now also. Dupree and Todd (or maybe just one of them) is an all-Greek dorm now. My junior year lived in Southern Hills apartments and there are still there and senior year lived in a pretty nice townhouse on Arlington GC. Got to believe that Richmond East apartments have been bulldozed to the ground by now!

Pikes were good athletes (and partyers) when I was down there. How did you get into that one??? :sssh: :D

Don't leave out T-Bom's. Took upside Margaritas in the famous barber chair. Still recall that "top shelf" tequila they used. Yumm..............

I went to EKU a pair of times in the last three or four years, and the main thing is.........GO TO CLASS!!!

As far as EKU and Richmond in general it is almost perfect to satisfy most needs. Close to Lexington (just about a fifteen or twenty minute drive up I-75), and theres alway's someone around to hangout with. Richmond is basically filled with apartment complex's housing thousands upon thousands of college kids. If you can control yourself and want to have a good time, try to find some buddies that live on Calarnie, Argile, off Alycia Dr., etc. Normally something going on about every night, especially on Thursday. And yes sadly, downtown isn't what it used to be, but a good time can still be found.

If your into golf, fishing, or just the outdoors in general then Lake Reba is perfect. The golf course up there, Gibson Bay is very college student friendly, and not a bad course. They also have a driving range, and a nine hole Par 3 course. There is also Battlefield and Arlington CC is you are the avid golfer and want to mix it up. If I spent as much time in the books as I did on the course I may not go back and forth between home and Richmond so much in my college career. :D

The Campus is also very friendly and full of activities. There are always new building popping up, and every week there seems to be something different going on around campus. If your interested you'll always know as long as you pass by Powell (where the cafeteria is, greek offices, etc.) Although I wasn't in a Fraternity, many of my best friends were. The Greek system at EKU is among the best so if thats what your down for, find the one that suits you, they have plenty of events during Rush week. My favorite part (aside from the females of course) was intramurals. Doesn't get any better than some flag football or some intramural basketball. True stories, a couple of my best friends played on a flag football team at Eastern, who went on to win the National Flag Football Championship. Had no idea there was such a thing until they went and won it but they sure enough did. They had many guys on that team like my buddies Irv and Dey-Dey so no wonder they were a dominant flag team. Irv's full name by the way is Irving Fryar Jr. (you do the math on that) and Dey-Dey was an ex-EKU player who left early for workouts with the Baltimore Ravens only to return to school (couldn't play ball anymore) because they only offered him a practice squad position. None-the-less he worked out with the likes of Ray Lewis and Ed Reed all summer. So shout out to G-Unit Assassin Flag Football. The second story is the name of my intramural b ball team one semester. One of my friends and guys on the team provided our sponsor from his place of employment. We were Solid Platinum.

But no matter what your looking for you should find it at EKU. Not small like a private college ala Georgetown, Union, Pikeville, etc. But not as big as a UK or Louisville. It is a perfect medium. Like I said, main thing is go to class and do your homework and you'll be okay. Something I had trouble doing, not only once, but twice. Hmmmm, wonder why. :D

I met my wife @ EKU. I enjoyed my time there. I would highly recommend the football games and get there early to tailgate. The best game was always Western but unfortunately they don't play anymore. When we went downtown we used to go to T-Bombs, Hurricanes, and The Whiskey (There were others but those stood out).

By the way, I lived on Killarney and there seemed to be a party there every other night. I remember some parties at High street and Edgewood. I wasn't in a frat but a lot of my friends were Phi Delts.

What is your major going to be?

My son doesn't need to spend near the time or money I did at the Family Dog, Sutters Mill, and First Street. :sssh:
Wow, lots of memories floating back now.

There was also a pool hall on First Street that we frequented quite a bit.
Taylors Pool Hall was my favorite downtown hangout. As long as you just shot your game and didn't mess with the townies, life was good. They sold burgers and fries and not much of anything else except cold beer. The bathroom was basically a shower stall with a drain in the floor, LOL.

Don't leave out T-Bom's. Took upside Margaritas in the famous barber chair. Still recall that "top shelf" tequila they used. Yumm..............
The Barber Chair, lol. I hope it is enshrined somewhere.

Anyone else have great memories of that Richmond institution, Ma Kelly's restaurant? What a place. There should be a separate thread just to discuss Ma Kelly's. :thumb:

I also fondly remember meals from Paco's, B & B Deli, Ritzy's and Sub Center.

I played a lot of golf at Arlington GC

Lake Reba was dry but we fished at Wilgreen Lake and Silver Creek (really good wade fishing for smallmouth)

Loved just spending an afternoon in the Ravine. I hope it is still there.

That's all they needed. Taylors Burgers were awesome. As of a couple years ago you could get a burger and fries from Taylors for like two dollars and fifty cents.

:dancingpa Yep. I think it was right next door to Phone 3. :ylsuper:

Once you decide to move off campus, you should have a decent amount of options as there are a bunch of EKU students who live in the surrounding subdivisions in and around Richmond.

If you are thinking about going Greek, try either the Pikes or the Phi Taus. My cousin was a Phi Tau and loved every minute of it. His off-campus apartment on Lancaster Ave was party central last spring for the Phi Taus. There are a bunch of really good guys in that fraternity. I am suggesting the Pikes as well cause if I didn't MJAllTheWay would strangle me....lol. In all seriousness, if you do decide to go Greek, don't let anyone influence you on which one to rush...follow your gut instinct.

I, too, did the upside downers at T-Bombs. Wild night.
