January 15, 201016 yr Derek Dooley is not that bad of a coach, he is one of the more respected coaches in some circles at the lower levels in the FBS. The insistence of a new coach keeping the present staff was stopped Cutcliffe. Did UT not have a buyout for Kiffin? Id really check out Al Golden from Temple. That would be a really good hire. If that cat can turn Temple around he can do well at UT.
January 16, 201016 yr WOW!!! They got a good Southern guy to fit in and it's an interesting hire that could work out. Looking at the numbers this is a sad sad day for Tenn football though! That should be the type of program that can go out and get a proven coach. I wish him luck and think you have to give guys a chance but this is a shocker!
January 16, 201016 yr Talked to one of my friends who is really close to a past UT great who was going to be part of Cutcliffe's staff at UT. Was told he was offered the job, but turned it down when the AD would give any wiggle room on bringing in his own staff. I really DON'T understand this hire at all...very good for Joker/Sanders recruiting in TN I would think. I bet the rest of the SEC is giddy with the hire!
January 16, 201016 yr I think people might not be giving this guy a fair chance. Granted I have really never heard of this guy before but he does come from good blood lines. He coached under Saban. The DC from Texas told the Vols to go look at him. This hire might be a blessing in disguise. One thing is for sure you won't have to worry about any viloations with this guy. He will run a clean program. One other thing UK fans might as well stop about the streak. It doesn't matter who is in there they won't beat the Vols.
January 16, 201016 yr I think it's a bandaide hire. Get somebody clean quick that will be easy to fire when a big name is available in the near future.
January 16, 201016 yr I think it's a bandaide hire. Get somebody clean quick that will be easy to fire when a big name is available in the near future.Who do you expect to become available in the future, that they can't get now?
January 16, 201016 yr If they are going to hire Dooley, why would they not give Kip Brown the opportunity. He grew up there, played there, and has coached there for years?
January 16, 201016 yr I'm no Vol fan, by any stretch (I break out in hives when I put on anything orange.), but this might be a good hire for them. But for all the similarities the new Tennessee coach might share with the old one, the differences were what stood out most after former Louisiana Tech coach Derek Dooley was formally introduced on Friday night to cap a wild, three-day search to take over the program. “Look guys, if you’re going to look for soundbites and things from me that are going to attack other programs and disparage people, that’s just not how I am,” Dooley said. “I’m worried about Tennessee. I’m worried about what we need to get our program going, and I’m going to always keep my focus on that. “I think when you worry about somebody else or what other people are doing then you’re not taking care of your own house. We’ve got plenty to be feeling good about in this program, and that’s what we should keep our focus on. The times of worrying about what happened are over.” http://www.govolsxtra.com/news/2010/jan/15/dooley-promises-integrity-and-class/ Nice looking family, too.
January 16, 201016 yr I know they were running out of time, but I think they could have opened up the pocketbook some more and gotten a bigger name coach. I did like what I heard at his presser if I was a Vol person. Good Luck to him.
January 16, 201016 yr He has the southern draw. Seems to be a good person, and may end up being a good coach. With that said, I know we have said it often recently, I think the streak ends next season.

I did like what I heard at his presser if I was a Vol person. Good Luck to him. I liked what Billy G said when he got to UK. Talk is often cheap. Maybe he'll be a great hire seems like an odd hire for a program like TN time will tell though.
January 19, 201016 yr Who do you expect to become available in the future, that they can't get now? I honeslty think there was A LOT of pressure to go get a coach right now because it's so late in the game when it comes to recruiting. They spent a ton of cash on Kiffins staff then got shunned by several coaches for the job including one of their own in Cutcliff. I don't think they had the luxuary to keep throwing darts hoping somebody would take the offer. If it didn't work out then they were baked when it comes to recruites. The clock was ticking and they had just blown a bunch of money IMO. If Dooley stays clean then that is better than what Kiffin did. If he wins then they look great. If he loses then it will be easy to fire him. I just think it was a bandaid hire. What has he proven to have a job like the Tenn job in your opinion?
January 19, 201016 yr I didn't like this hire when I first heard about him because he wasn't a big name but that doesn't matter. He does have the Dooley name and that does mean a lot in the SEC!! I think he will do fine. One thing is for sure he won't break any rules like Lane did. He will run a clean program. UK fans might as well as forget for beating UT. It doesn't matter who is in there they will beat UK. My almost 6 month old great niece could coach UT to a win over UK. HA HA HA HA
