I'm not an expert, not part of the UT brain trust, and am definitely no Vol fan. I was asking a question.

 

I can go by what I've seen over the years, though. Going after the big name does not alway produce big results. Butch Davis has done well at North Carolina and Saban at Alabama, but Spurrier has pretty much stunk it up in Columbia and Howard Schnellenberger failed at Oklahoma. Not to mention Callahan at Nebraska, Wiess at ND, and Al Groh at Virginia. In hind sight (which is always 20/20), they all look like bad hires, but at the time they were the hot or big names.

 

But in the SEC don't you need a slam dunk hire? Especially at UT where IMO they grossly overvalue their place in the CFB world?

No Berry and no Williams. Kiff's big recruits this year are not coming. What do they have coming back?

Let's see they have Brown back for one. I really haven't had a chance to look to see who they are bringing back but they will be better than people think. They only lost a few of those guys and some of them are still going to UT. They might be picking up a big WR from Louisana who decommitted from LSU.

Nice article I read about a Knoxville attorney.

 

A Knoxville attorney has filed paperwork seeking to rename a local waste water treatment plant in honor of Lane Kiffin.

 

Drew McElroy paid $262 and filed an application with the Knoxville City Council Public Properties and Facilities Naming Committee to rename the Kuwahee Wastewater Treatment Plant as the Lane Kiffin Sewage Center.

 

"It dawned on me -- Lane Kiffin told us that he hoped the fans would understand. I thought, 'Well, naming the wastewater plant for him would let him know, I think very clearly, we do understand,' " McElroy told WBIR-TV, a local NBC affiliate. "We want to memorialize his stay here, and I think this would be doing it appropriately."

 

According to WBIR, McElroy wrote that he wanted "to honor our recently departed head coach and raise awareness of the good work done by the Knoxville Utilities Board."

 

The committee hasn't set a date for its next meeting, but McElroy said he intends to follow through.

Dooley was 4-8 last year, I wouldn't base the hire on this too much, but you have to wonder why they didn't do what Coach Moore did with us and go get your Home run and pay the man. Gary Patterson/Peterson/Dungy/Cower (sp)/Stoops/Petrino/Payton/Gruden. Hey coach here is $40 million eight year contract, full control.

 

We already have several in home visits with some ex Vol kids.

Bryce will be a good one, but I'm not impressed with anyone they've brought in lately. NuKeese was one of the big recruits last year and was always overrated IMO. The young Safety looked good but that was about it. Most of the WR that were productive were Seniors I believe. Fulmer did not recruit well during his last few years and this years class is obviously going to disappoint. I would not be shocked if UT is the worst team in the SEC next season.

Exactly. If Stephens or whoever is so bad that they couldn't replace Crompton early in the year UT is going to be in a world of hurt IMO. Also, Kiffin has done a nice job in the passing game wherever he's gone so that kind of hid Crompton as the season went along IMO. Can Dooley do that with a kid that is worse than JC? You're guess is as good as mine.

Then you have guys who've had alot of success in their careers in Spurrier, Miles, Richt(:puke:), Petrino. Then guys like Chizik and Joker who seem to be on the right page. Even Bobby Johnson at Vandy is established, and UT answers with Dooley? Who the heck is that (sarcasm)? It's a joke IMO. It may end up being a good hire but most likely it's going to take some time. UT may not give him that chance.

I look at it like this. He could do very well it's a great program. If you made a list of 50 candidates would he crack your top 50 before he was hired? Probably not!

However, for the sake of the argument, I've seen too many "Slam Dunks" turn into rim shots. The ones we consider slam dunks now, were not necessarily so when they were hired.

 

Take Meyer, for example. He's a star now, but he was an established coach, a rising star, when Florida came calling in 2005. The consensus of the Gator fans and boosters, and the state media, was that Jeromy Foley put his job on the line when he hired Urban over "The Visor". Believe me, I'm surrounded by the Gator faithful and they were having conniption fits. I thought my son, the traitor, would turn inside out. I think his best friend, a self proclaimed "Biggest Gator Fan On Earth", actually did. :banana:

 

Now take Dan Hawkins. By what I can tell, he was considered a "Slam Dunk" the next year for Colorado. Primarily because of Urban Meyer's success. Another rising star from a non BCS conference. Boise State no less. That didn't work out so hot.

 

Taking the next big thing may lessen your odds, but picking a coach is still a crap shoot in the end.

Those are some good analogies Swampy! If I was an AD at a big time program I would roll the dice with an established coach that can recruit like crazy. Those great athletes tend to make great coaches. A guy like Saban to Alabama was low risk IMO. Same with Cal at UK. The only thing you worry about with those guys is getting in trouble. They are going to get the athletes and they can coach. I told my dad the day Myer got hired at Fla that college football was about to change. His spread out style with that recruiting base was bad news for the rest of college football.
