With these comments coming to light, I fail to see how it helps Reid, who looks to be polling behind by double digits against potential Republican opposition.

Here's what I heard Bob Schieffer say this morning. Lott wasn't needed, so he had to go. Reid is needed to push HCR, so he can stay.

Reid has apologized...did McConnell or Lott apologize and that apology not get accepted?

 

My understanding was that both apologized.

 

Either we aren't going to tolerate these kinds of comments from either party or we tolerate them from both.

 

I don't think the comment means that Reid is a racist, but it shows a poor lack of tact. I don't think he should be drummed out of his party, but I don't think he should be a party 'leader' if he shows this kind of poor judgement.

 

It may not matter after the next election, ... polls show if his election were held today, he would lose to about anyone who wants to run against him.

 

I just find it entertaining the difference that is made depending on who says it. Let Al Franken say it, and all would be forgiven. Let Rush Limbaugh (who I don't like BTW) say it, and we would see congress act swiftly to get him off the air.

 

With all that being said, .... if it were Republicans in this boat, I think their party would react the same way. If he is 'one of us', it is okay and we forgive you. If you are not, ... then off with his head! Politicians are politicians and the time for term limits for these clowns is way past due.

Maybe, but Lott has a history of legislative action unfriendly toward blacks. I don't necessarily know that that is the case with Reid, since I've not really kept up with the national political scene in the years since he emerged as a major player.

I'd have to learn more details about the legislation unfriendly towards blacks as that on it's face certainly doesn't mean Lott is a racist either.

As far as biggies go, he voted against the MLK holiday, as well as against continuing the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act. I also remember anecdotes about him being very active against the desegregation of Ole Miss while a student there. There was also a Time magazine article on his taking the lead in preventing Sigma Nu fraternity from admitting blacks to any of its U.S. chapters.

Have you read anything about why he voted against them? You know as well as I do that there are often very good reasons to vote against a particular piece of legislation at a particular time, not the least of which is the state he represents and the fact he wants to be re-elected. He could be merely a coward. Shoot, we've all heard of people who create a piece of legislation and then are the first to vote against it. College days I'm not interested in as nobody in Washington would be in office based on those days. I seem to recall when it hit the fan on him, blacks who knew him well came to his defense, including from across the aisle.

Harry Reid said Obama was capable of winning the presidency as a black man because he doesn't speak with a "Negro dialect," which is accurate as far as my opinion is concerned, yet no one uses "Negro" to describe black people or their culture; it's an artifact of slavery and segregation. It shows he's out of touch, not a racist.

 

Trent Lott said that if the person who ran on the platform of "Segregation Forever!" had won the presidency this country would be better off. And as Jim pointed out, it wasn't his first time endorsing segregation.

 

They aren't comparable statements.

 

And before anyone goes there, I strongly dislike Harry Reid.

I'm no fan of Reid, either. But I don't think this makes him a racist. In its context, this comment seems like nothing more than practical, honest analysis. As to using the word "Negro", I don't know what term anyone could have used that wouldn't have been construed to be offensive, or racist by someone looking for that.
