Like you said his comment is out of touch and not a very smart one. A mistake that could be made by a D or an R. But what most see as offensive is that it seems to be overlooked/allowed/okay if you have a D in front of your name, but not if you have an R.

 

I do not think Reid is a racist, but would the same people defending him be defending Mitch McConnell if it came out of his mouth? No... That is what is offensive. Politics...

 

I don't think his comment has been overlooked or allowed. It's been given heavy circulation on every news outlet I come in contact with and it's something I wouldn't have paid a bit of attention to otherwise. There's nothing there.

As I expected, you can't actually explain what is offensive or racist about the remark. Either you don't know what is offensive or racist about it and you're peddling it anyway or you're latching onto some lame partisan attempt to smear the other party and refusing to let go. There is NOTHING offensve or racist about the remark. The only reason some are trying to portray it that way is to keep the racist pot stirred up. Most of what is reported as being racist or offensive, I never find it to be. Just people wanting their 15 minutes by crying foul and making a public stink. I am a Redneck with a Redneck dilect. I believe he was attempting to pay a compliment to ST and chose his words poorly, much as Reid did in his choice of words. That is the reason I posed the question, what would be the reaction had this been McCain or McConnell (a more apples to apples comparison)?

You guys can give Lott a pass all you want, but I'm going to go with the evidence that points a different way. And really, since when does a racist dirtbag like Strom Thurmond even deserve compliments? Guys like him and Lott and Jesse Helms were given decades of opportunities to do the right thing, yet they played it safe and appeased their base instead.

 

And like Habib said, while Reid's comments weren't the most PC in the world, they were an honest criticism of the American electorate.

I think the level of reaction would be about the same, at the most. Reid's comments weren't pejorative about Obama or his race. Though I think any reaction would come from a different angle. The large part of the reaction over Reid's comment are from those on the right trying to get one back over the result of Lott's comment. However, I do think Republicans face more scrutiny when mentioning race, sometimes unfairly.

I agree that Reid's words were a poor choice and not intended to be in any way pejorative. And you are right it is being blown out of proportion just like Lott's were. I also agree that R's seem to take more heat and sometimes unfairly. I do think there would be a huge outcry from the D's if a prominent R like McCain or McConnell had said the same thing. I do think the NAACP, Sharpton, the Black Caucus, etc. would not be near as quick to accept McCain's apology as they were Reid's and would likely be calling for McCain's head. We will just have to wait until one of these bumbling fools sticks his foot in his mouth in a non pejorative way to see. Should not be long...

I am not sure what Lott was thinking, but do you really believe he was thinking "man America would be awesome if segregation had become the norm." Even if he did believe that, which I do not think he did, do you think he would have said it on the senate floor and intentionally throw away his political career which took decades to build to take a jab at african americans? I do not think so. I think it was a poor choice of words by a guy trying to give a long serving politician a compliment.

If you can't see anything offensive in that or it actually needs to be explained to you, well then there is no point arguing with you. You usually make well thought out posts, not so in this case. I see you'd rather wiggle out of the fact that you yourself said it was "out of touch" which would, at the very least, show that it was offensive. You choose to blow off the fact that he felt the need to apologize for the comment which again, at the very least, shows that it was offensive. Instead you choose to just take a shot at me, which tells me deep down, you know you're wrong.

If you're talking to me, I was just making a comment on the overall theme of downtrodden and much-maligned Republicans as a whole. No matter what the topic, it seems like the recurrant cry is "If he'd been a Republican...." Both parties have mostly idiots. If we throw them all out, who's going to rule the rest of us dunces?
