I thought he started that year off as the starter. He was a better runner than Wilson but Wilson the better passer.

I could be wrong, but I think Wilson started the season. However, DeMatteo saw time in those first couple games, then he became the starter for a game or two. Finally, Wilson started again and finished the year as the starter. IMO, Wilson was the better runner and had the stronger arm of the two at the time, but DeMatteo just had a better presence in the pocket. Wilson had missed almost his entire sophomore year due to injury, and he struggled early during his junior year. It took him a good 5 games before he became comfortable that year.

I just went back and looked at the stats from last year. I'm guessing Wilson got the start against Beechwood and then DeMatteo got the start against Simon Kenton. However, each QB played in both games. Then Wilson got the start against CovCath and remainded the starter the rest of the year.

Yes, that is about how I remembered it.

Wilson started the 1st two games got pulled in the Simon game. DeMatteo started the Cov. Cath. game and got knocked out like the 3rd play Wilson then came in and never looked back.

Thanks. I couldn't remember exactly how it went. DeMatteo should be a nice addition to the team next season.

A combination of Leonard and Dematteo would be very potent 1..2 punch at the WR postition. Add in Bruns out of the backfield, and your talking about a very potent receiving corp.

If Dixie can get the O and D lines to gell early, they could have a very successful season next year.

This may be heresy to some, but is there any chance Pike moves to offensive tackle? With his height, he could be an outstanding offensive tackle. Might not have quick enough feet (at this stage) to be a D-1 qb, but does have quick enough feet to play D-1 offensive line.

I have not heard a word about Pike playing anything other than QB and will be very, very surprised if he doesn't play QB. If I were coaching Dixie, he would be my QB. The kid is a playmaker.

IF Pike does play QB, which I believe he will, does he still play defense.

In my opinion,he was there best defensive of player.

I know alot of 1A & 2A QB's play both ways, but I do not think it would work at the 5A &6A level.

Pike is a running QB, who may run 15 times a game. I do not think he would last if he played both ways

I highly doubt it, but really, what do I know? :D They've spent the last 2 seasons grooming him to be the next QB at Dixie. From everything I've heard to date, it's been a pretty successful process. Plus, I don't know of anyone in the halls of Dixie right now that would give them a better chance of winning. If they do move him to a tackle, then they need to start working on that as soon as basketball is over. For a kid his size, he doesn't play very strong IMO. On defense this past year, I thought he got pushed around a lot by smaller guys. Plus, he would lose the leverage battle when lined up in a 3-point stance as a DE. If any position change were to occur, I would think they'd use him more like Ryle used Tate Nichols this past season, except he'd get a lot more touches.

Is it possible that he doesn't play QB in college? Yeah, it's very possible. Coaches will have plenty of film of him on both sides of the ball and at various positions, so they should have a solid idea what's best for him come college. However, at this point in time, he has great height for a QB and an above average arm. As I've stated earlier, if Mr. Preston is still around, I think he can develop Pike into a possible DI quarterback. It stinks that we have to wait so long to see what he does against varsity competition where the boys are faster and bigger. He won't be able to run over defenders as easily as he has in the past.

I don't know how many games you watched last year, but I don't think Pike was their top defensive player last year. IMO, he struggled quite a bit last year. He had problems shedding blockers and taking the right angles. By the end of the year, he was playing much better though.

The last QB at Dixie to play defense was Matt O'Toole, I believe. He played safety. IMO, Wilson could've been the best DB this past season, so with him not playing, I highly doubt Pike would play.

Plus depending on who they played he would have to cover the slot. That was not his strong suit, he is not an open field player.

Correct. If I remember correctly, he barely played in the Conner game because of this. However, he did get much better by the end of the season. He's better suited for a DE, but they had two solid seniors there. When Zumdick went down with a season ending knee injury, I thought Pike would move up to the line, but he didn't.

The games I saw I thought he struggled a bit defensively and didn't appear particularly strong for someone his size. I did get to watch him QB a JV game against Ryle and I thought he was quite mobile for his size and has a nice arm. There is no question, however, he is perfectly sized to be an effective TE - certainly a nice big target.
