If Pike goes both ways, then he's going to have to condition hard this offseason. When he started getting more involved with the offense late in the year, he was spent halfway through the 3rd. Plus O'Toole played safety, so there wasn't as much physical assertion on the defensive side as Pike would be getting at DE or LB. I just don't see him playing defense next year. My main basis on that is if Wilson didn't play it, Pike isn't going to play it. Wilson, IMO, would've been a great safety the past couple years.

 

As for the defense, I had heard with Sorrell retiring last school year, that he was going to coach one more year of football. That one year would've been this past season. The defense has really struggled since the '04 season, and that was a solid "bend but don't break" defense.

 

I sort of think the same thing except the two players are completly opposite, Pike loves contact and loves delievering the blow, and wilson didn't like much of either.

 

If Pike can be in top shape he could help the defensive side alot, if Sorrell decides he should play.

 

I think DeMatteo can be a excellent WR or RB

Pike will be at quarterback this year. I think he brings a whole new mentality to the team, he's a winner and always has been. I watched the kid play JV quarterback last year and he impressed me way more than Wilson did. Dixie could have made the switch last year and put wilson at wide out.

Dixie can have a very dangerous offense this year!

It would've been a huge mistake to put Pike at QB this past season IMO. He only had one year of experience at it, and that was at the freshman level. Being able to have another year at QB at the JV level should've helped him tremendously for next year. He's not going to be able to simply use his size to his advantage at the varsity level like he did at the lower 2 levels.

I never once saw Wilson shy away from contact last year. He delivered blows when running the ball, and he took some vicious hits when throwing the ball. If anything, I thought Pike was the softer of the two (at the varsity level).

 

At a school the size of Dixie, and the potential Pike has at QB, there's no way he plays any defense.

The lines will probably be the biggest question marks heading into the 2010 season. Offensively, Pike is set at QB. He's big, has a strong arm, and he has good mobility for a guy his size. The only real negative with Pike is that he's still raw. He's only been playing QB for 2 years now. I hope Mr. Preston is around to help work with him. I would expect them to run the same offense they have for years now. They'll have Leonard back as the primary receiver with Bruns in the backfield. They also have some guys returning that saw time at wideout last year. Defensively, they return some guys with experience at the DB, safety, and linebacker spots. However, they have to get bigger, and they have to tackle better.

 

 

Nees, Greg Preston just closed out a rather successful college career quarterbacking Wynona State University. Think he might stop by Dixie this summer and give Pike some pointers?

Did Hatton play QB in freshman ball last year? Did he get any reps in JV games anywhere? That all counts as experience, but I see your point about varsity experience. If he hasn't had reps in any high school games, then he does not have near as much experience as Pike. Now, I haven't seen Hatton play so I can't comment on his ability, but all those praising him here definitely have my interest perked up. I would like to hear more details about his experience.

 

Regardless, I will say, if Pike isn't the QB at Dixie this year it will be a huge shocker - for a lot of reasons. First and foremost, he is the most impressive QB I have seen in JV games the last few years, and that includes Towles. Personally, I would take Pike over Towles at QB without even a second thought.

I totally agree i hope the kid can reach all his potential, i have heard that he is getting alot of attention from college coaches already.

I also heard that he worked alot last off season and is going to this upcoming season with Pookie Jones that played at Kentucky. And Dustin Grutza that played at UC

While I applaud your passion for the Dixie program, I am really curious why Dixie fans continue to accept mediocrity? Is it time for a coaching/staff change? The current coach has been the head coach for app 12-14 years. How many winning seasons has the program had since he has been the head coach? What is the program's post-season record during his tenure? Dixie has had many great football players play for the school throughtout the years, but it seems that the program never improves? Why? Pike and others may be great athletes and have great potential, but I'm afraid that you'll see the same old product that you've seen for years. :confused::confused:

^ It is extremely rare for high school coaches to get fired unless they do something DRASTICALLY wrong. Wins and loses are irrelevant to the schools administration and school board, unfortunately!

Nees thanks for the warm welcome. I personally like Coach Spritzky. He's the type of guy that I could probably sit around the pool with and shoot the breeze with on a hot summer day. I am not questioning his motivation or desire to succeed, however when is enough enough? It just seems to me that mediocrity rules the roost at the Dixie program. I know that it's nearly impossible to compete with the likes of Highlands, but shouldn't they be more competitive?
