December 29, 200916 yr Was coming back from Columbus Sunday afternoon, so had to listen to the Bengals on the radio. Got a kick out of how many times Dave Lapham described Cincy's offense as "playing in a phone booth". (Okay, so I was a little ticked off about the play calling...but that's for a different thread!) But, what got me wondering, was how many people under 25 even know what a phone booth is? Then I started thinking about some other phrases that are outdated, but still being used. "Dial a number" - Just how many rotary phones are still out there?!? "Pumping gas" - Didn't this go out in the 50's? "Floppy disc" - Remember when they were the size of a small plate, and actually could bend!?!?! "Record of the Year" - This one still gets me everytime a music awards show comes on. Any others that come to mind?
December 29, 200916 yr "Drop a Dime" - basketball lingo. Do youngsters realize what the multiple references are?

I actually did have to pump gas one time at a hole-in-the-wall gas station in the middle of nowhere in Eastern KY. Somewhere near Whitesburg.

December 29, 200916 yr Most of those phrases have become slang and are commonly used. I wouldn't say that any of them are really "outdated", even if the meanings has evolved some. You wonder how many people under 25 know what a phone booth is? I'd guess most, if not everyone (over age 13 or so.) Many probably haven't actually BEEN in a phone booth, but there was a relatively recent movie whose setting was entirely in a phone booth for crying out loud.
December 29, 200916 yr I am ashamed to say that I am not hip to what is wrong with alot of these; especially pumping gas. Don't we pump gas every day? Doesn't anyone else dig my rap and see that these are not uncool.
December 29, 200916 yr Fiddle Sticks. That is in my everyday vocabulary. Usually making fun of people who cuss a lot.
