Suggestions for the new commissioner of the KHSAA

Featured Replies

I read the other thread and saw several comments about football not getting the things it needs from the KHSAA. From where I sit, football is treated more than fairly by the organization. I would like to hear the suggestions you all would make to the new commissioner (whoever it may be). Make them good, he/she may read this site :thumb:

One request - don't list a problem unless you include a suggested solution.

The open date - I would like to see the open date go to week 11 for everyone, like it used to be. Go back to two scrimmages, play the 10 regular season games, then have one off week for everyone, then start the playoffs. This would give everyone one week off before the playoffs to prepare for teams that they likely have never seen.

Playoffs - if we are going to stay will six class, as I suspect we are, go ahead and let every team in the playoffs and play a single elimination tournament. Only one 2A team has not got in since we went to six classes, and only a hand full in the other classes. Go ahead and let them all in, for a mythical shot at a long playoff run. The regular season would still be useful for seeding purposes. It would only add one week to the season.

Spring Football - Have two weeks of practice, then have live scrimmages against other schools on a Saturday, having multiple schools at one location for possibly half scrimmages. Have official clinics in conjunction with Spring Football and let the officials, new and old, work the multiple scrimmages to work on their trade, and to get experience for the young officials. Florida does this, it works to promote football, it works to get experience for young players, and it also works to assist officials for the upcoming season.

Weightlifting - Sanction weightlifting as a KHSAA sport. Have a true season with district meets, regional meets, and a State Championship meet.

District- Have every district have the same number of teams in it. Its not fair for one district to have 6 teams in it and the other districts to have 4.

Feeder Schools-Lock students if they are at a feeder grade school going to high school. Only at the 7th and 8th grade. It is not fair to let them work in the system and then be playing them for the next four years.

Rule 4

Class System - Do away with the class system for all sports, or implement a class system for all sports. If there is going to be a class system make it uniform accross the board. If there are going to be six classes in football, there should be six classes in basketball, baseball, swimming, track, volleyballe, etc.

Class System - If you are going to allow teams to play up then teams should be allowed to petition to play down. Ideally if you are going to have classes then teams should play in there respective class. No playing up or down.

Practice Limits - Allow for practice anytime other than the designated dead period. Players and coaches are doing this now by disguising themselves as club and/or AAU teams.

Transfers - Allow all transfer students to play varsity sports. If a student is allowed to go to a school they should be allowed to play for the school regardless.

More to come.

First this is just silly IMO. This is the argument/reasoning that everybody gets a trophy. Talk about water down.

Why would a team want to play down?

This doesn't happen in football. UUHHH, this is a football thread.

Now this really tops them all. You can't be serious. So what you are saying, that if team X doesn't look like they will win State the upcoming season and team Y does, then a player should be allowed to transfer to Y regardless of the previous year or vice versa.

More to come.

Passing League- The idea to do away with passing league was an outrage last year. Why does basketball need another month to have practice. Doest football get to have live practices in april?? Basketball season ends in mid march, then 3 full months later they get an entire month to practice. When football season is 2 months away, and its only allowed for conditioning.

Passing League should IMO be allowed year round, or possibly be able to start in april. Its just like anyother non contact sport. Basketball is year-round with AAU. Soccer is year round with Indoor leagues, and so is volleyball with club teams. Let there be passing league throughout the offseason.

There is a growing sentiment amongst coaches to install classes for more team sports. I doubt that it will happen to basketball during my lifetime due to the popularity of the Sweet 16, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen in baseball and softball.

Playing down is not realistic. The whole rationale for classes is the belief that bigger schools, with their bigger enrollments, have a greater chance of having more good athletes than smaller schools do. I think that is solid rationale. If schools want to move up (and put themselves in the position of facing what should be tougher competition) due to the schools being geographically isolated, the KHSAA is fine with that self-imposed disadvantage. But allowing a school to play down would be allowing that school to put itself in a position where it had a size advantage over the other schools in that smaller class. Thus, that idea is not going to, nor should it, happen.

Unlimited practice time, other than the dead period, is also not going to happen. The KHSAA, believe it or not, really is cognizant of the need to support all sports, not just the major ones and is thus concerned about the affect of unlimited practice time for the major sports on the other sports. It's a balancing act that surely doesn't, and can't, please everyone. You are right about the AAU situation, but there really is little that can be done to regulate that beyond what the KHSAA does now. And to put it bluntly, if we were to install a rule that too severely limited participation in AAU or similar type programs, I'm afraid in some sports a growing number of athletes would choose the AAU team over the high school team. Again, another balancing act situation.

As to your transfer idea, the libertarian in me supports your concept. I believe Florida has the rule that a kid can play at any high school he/she is enrolled at on the first day of the school year, regardless of whether he/she played varsity sports at another school the prior year (which I believe is why you see some absolute powerhouse athletic programs in Florida). Unfortunately, if that happened in Ky, you'd probably see a huge uproar by the "have nots" against the "haves" to a degree much more emotional and caustic than what we've experienced with the public vs private debate. It would tear Ky high school athletics apart at the seams. I just don't see that happening for that reason, although philosophically I'm in agreement with your idea due to my strong belief in a parent's right to send his/her kid to any school the parent wants from year to year. If a school system dropped its foreign language program, I'd want to be able to transfer my son. If the school system dropped or cut back it's AP classes, I'd want to be able to transfer my son. If my son was having "social" problems of a severe nature, I'd want to be able to transfer my son. If a new administration comes in and no longer supports athletics, I'd want to be able to transfer my son. If the administration hires a new head coach that I don't believe is a good role model for my son, I'd want to transfer my son. I can think of other reasons why changing cirumstances would lead me to believe that a change in high schools might be best for my son without my son being ineligible to play athletics for a year or trying to satisfy the some what murky at times exceptions to By Law 6.

Now what else have you come up with?:D

You said you have more to come, so I was just wondering out what else was coming from you.

Spring Practice for Football: Eliminate the connection with the end of the team's basketball season. Set hard dates and have everyone do spring practice in early April.

Passing League- The idea to do away with passing league was an outrage last year. Why does basketball need another month to have practice. Doest football get to have live practices in april?? I am MUCH more okay with playing up than playing down. The only way I would agree with allowing playing down is in the case of new teams. (EG. A 3A school starts a football program for the first time. Let them play down until they build their program up to be able to compete at the higher level.)

I don't like the unlimited transfer of student athletes. How can anyone build a program if kids are allowed to transfer anytime they have a whim.

Thanks for the responses. A lot of what you guys have said makes sense but I don't see enough info here to explain the "we need a commissioner who will give football some respect" sentiment on the other thread. Just my opinion.

I agree with:

- set a date specific 2 week practice period for Spring Football capped by a scrimmage day at the end of the 2 weeks.

- all football teams in the playoffs. To me it's an experience the kids deserve.

I don't agree with:

- classes for all team sports. I don't care if they class every other sport, but leave basketball alone. The Sweet Sixteen is the greatest show in hoops.

- Football bye weeks. I don't think there should be "open" weeks at all. Again, just my opinion.

One no one has mentioned:

- Move the basketball season back 1 week but keep the end date the same to try to minimize overlap of football and basketball seasons. (I actually thought this one would be #1 on several people's list)

Class System - Do away with the class system for all sports, or implement a class system for all sports. If there is going to be a class system make it uniform accross the board. Might as well. There would be more classes (and by extension, state championships) than regions.:D
