Suggestions for the new commissioner of the KHSAA

Featured Replies

I remain in favor of making the state championship games a 3 day event, especially if it's going to remain in BG for a while. I'd like to see the 2 games at 11 and 3. That way the second game should be over by around 5 or 5:30 while it's still relatively light and the coldness of dark hasn't set in. If we played the games on Thurs, Fri and Sat, the students of the teams playing at 3 on Thurs could in almost every case be home Thurs night and be able to attend school on Fri, which should eliminate any objection from the superintendents (except for the fact the football coaches attending all games would be out 2 school days, but I think that can be addressed by coaches using PD days if clinics are being held in the evenings of Thurs and Friday).

The workers that have to be outside the entire event would have much shorter days in the elements. I can tell you that the KHSAA workers that are there at 6:30 in the morning and don't get out of there until 10:30 at night after having been out in the cold the entire day really hate it. So do the stadium workers forced to endure the same. The media types in the unheated and open press box wouldn't be exposed to the elements for as long of a period. They were not happy with what they endured this year.

With only two games a day, according to one sports writer I spoke with, it would allow them to provide better coverage of the two games played because they could devote their coverage to only two games vs three per day. It would also minimize the chance of the last game being delayed substantially by delays of prior games (there would only be one prior game under my scenario).

I'd like to see a heated tent be set up outside the one endzone that would allow the fans staying for both games to get out of the elements for a while. Sell t-shirts, other items, hot chocolate, coffee and food in the tent. Have table and chairs and TV sets to watch any college games that might be on during the break between the two games. I think it would be a money maker for the KHSAA, BG and/or the vendors and would help increase "all games" ticket sales. Unless you are in the Hilltopper room, it's tough being a fan with no place to go to get warm if you want to attend all the games. It might also cut down on those fans that currently buy a ticket for one game but stay for all three. If you'd have to show a ticket for the next game to get into the heated tent, I think a lot of people would shell out the extra bucks to get warm. Heck, set up a ticket booth or two outside the tent. Plus by making it a three day event, you'd automatically force people to buy at least 3 tickets to watch all six games, whereas now, those cheating only have to buy 2.

I doubt that we can ever make the football championship games the event that the Sweet 16 is, but I'd like to see the KHSAA make changes to make it closer to that type of event. By the way (and off point), I think WKU missed a great opportunity when they built the parking garage between Feix Stadium and Diddle Arena. That would have been the perfect spot for a hotel that had lobby access available to both venues and I think there would have been high demand for rooms for WKU basketball and football events; the Girls Sweet 16, the football championship games and the other events conducted by WKU throughout the year.

Thanks for the responses. A lot of what you guys have said makes sense but I don't see enough info here to explain the "we need a commissioner who will give football some respect" sentiment on the other thread. Just my opinion.

I agree with:

- set a date specific 2 week practice period for Spring Football capped by a scrimmage day at the end of the 2 weeks.

- all football teams in the playoffs. To me it's an experience the kids deserve.

I don't agree with:

- classes for all team sports. I don't care if they class every other sport, but leave basketball alone. The Sweet Sixteen is the greatest show in hoops.

- Football bye weeks. I don't think there should be "open" weeks at all. Again, just my opinion.

One no one has mentioned:

- Move the basketball season back 1 week but keep the end date the same to try to minimize overlap of football and basketball seasons. (I actually thought this one would be #1 on several people's list)

I think only top 2 teams in each district should go to playoffs...this would also fix the overlap problem and fix a huge problem with the competitive level in the first two weeks of the playoffs.

Fix it so no team with a 0-10 record makes the playoffs.

If post season play stays as it is, just call the first week after regular season something other than play-off - i.e. district tourn (to borrow from the other sports) - it's all just words -

I don't think everyone should advance either - in any sport - why should district runner ups advance to regional tourn - it just drags out the season - but it is what it is - both sides have very strong convictions regarding extending play for everyone or having only the best continue in the post season - no plan will make both happy.

So just re-name it so it is accurate.

I always thought that you earned a playoff bid and no team that goes let's say seven games or more under .500 has earned that right I.M.O.

I think Class 1A should be 6- or 8- or m9-man football with the other five classes being 11-man. Allow anyone who is a Class 1A team the option to play 11-man but only if they legitimately have enough players consistantly to field a team.

Schools like Jenkins, KY Country Day, Caverna, Fulton County and Fulton City usually don't have a decent amount of players come out for the team so they only have a handful of players on the sideline when not in the game. It would also allow for other schools who don't have football the chance to start a program.

I would like to see us add 2 more officials to each crew. A side judge and a field judge. That would be 7 officials, just like in GA, FL and in college. Would certainly help us zebra's on the field.

Passing League- The idea to do away with passing league was an outrage last year. Why does basketball need another month to have practice. Doest football get to have live practices in april?? Basketball season ends in mid march, then 3 full months later they get an entire month to practice. When football season is 2 months away, and its only allowed for conditioning.

Passing League should IMO be allowed year round, or possibly be able to start in april. Its just like anyother non contact sport. Basketball is year-round with AAU. Soccer is year round with Indoor leagues, and so is volleyball with club teams. Let there be passing league throughout the offseason.

AAU basketball, indoor soccer, and club volleyball are not KHSAA sanctioned. These are activities that exist outside of school-sanctioned athletics. If passing leagues are so important, why can't a non-KHSAA sanctioned league be established, similar to the above sports? What are the obstacles to such a league being established? Serious question.

I read the other thread and saw several comments about football not getting the things it needs from the KHSAA. From where I sit, football is treated more than fairly by the organization. I would like to hear the suggestions you all would make to the new commissioner (whoever it may be). Make them good, he/she may read this site :thumb:

One request - don't list a problem unless you include a suggested solution.

Sounds like a great idea!

Great idea! Is there any reason this can't be done?

1- Move Spring football to the first two weeks on June for spring practice and 7 on 7.

2-Basketball start date back to Dec.1st. Allow them to start practicing Nov1st and allow they to play as many AAU games in Nov.

Alot of these teams are lead by highschool coaches and even though not KHSAA sanctioned the teams look awful familiar. Many of them are feeder programs to specific schools.

When football is involved the old nasty "recruiting" word is sure to come up.

Lower your pay and schools might be able to pay for 7 officials.

I would like to see 2 officials removed. This would help eliminate the shortage of officials we now face.

Obviously, club teams are not allowed to have any association with the school's athletic department in any way, including contact with the coaches of the school team. A person non-affiliated with the school team would have to put their own team together.

Yes, I agree that the school team and club teams often look incredibly similar, if not the same altogether. However, as long as all the KHSAA rules are followed, I don't see a problem with it. I still don't see how something similar couldn't be put together for a passing league of sorts, especially since none of the other sports seem to have any issues with creating club teams/leagues.
