Suggestions for the new commissioner of the KHSAA

Featured Replies

Obviously, club teams are not allowed to have any association with the school's athletic department in any way, including contact with the coaches of the school team. A person non-affiliated with the school team would have to put their own team together.

Yes, I agree that the school team and club teams often look incredibly similar, if not the same altogether. However, as long as all the KHSAA rules are followed, I don't see a problem with it. I still don't see how something similar couldn't be put together for a passing league of sorts, especially since none of the other sports seem to have any issues with creating club teams/leagues.

Actually, here in Louisville there's always a big hullabaloo over girls club Volleyball and the high school teams. There's been controversy over AAU basketball teams and where those players play in high school as well. And don't even get me started on baseball.

Oh, I don't doubt that there is controversy! I've certainly heard some of it up here in NKY too. My point is simply that other sports do it, even amidst controversy. Why can't football? :idunno:

It seems that a non-school, non-KHSAA club passing league could possibly help address some of the concerns mentioned in some of the earlier posts. Admittedly, I'm not all that familiar with the format of a passing league. However, it seems that even though teams would likely not be able to run the same offenses as their school team, it would still help developing quarterbacks and receivers get in additional reps and routes while waiting for the the KHSAA-sanctioned passing leagues start.

I am willing to bet that if a football-minded person with a passion for the game, some sport management experience, and zero ties to a school or team started a passing league or 8-man football league in the off-season, people would sign up for it. It has the potential to offer the same benefits to football players as it does to athletes involved in the club leagues of other sports.

This just seems too obvious though. And, of course, if it was that easy, someone would have started something like this a long time ago. What am I missing? Logistically, why is something like I described not possible?

I used to hear all of these same arguements when I was in KY. I was one of the chosen few to be born and raised in the Commonweath and one thing you guys have to realize is KY is not a football state. After playing college ball i got into college coaching and have been in the south east for the past 5 years. We do not get full pads for spring practice, but, we end school on Friday June 12 and start with helmets and shoulder pads on June 14. I would trade spring practice for an early summer start. When I was in MS and AL summer was the same way with 4 weeks of spring practice. The biggest problem I have seen in KY high school sports is every basketball coach in the state wants to take every 6'0'' 175 lb kid and make them think they should just concentrate on basketball. Forget the fact that there is not a 6 foot 175 pound player in the NCAA tournment. But there are a ton of them playing in bowl games. Good luck with whomever you get as your new leader!!

Until there is more parity in football in KY the number of teams in the playoffs is too high. There are approximately 1/3 of playoff teams with .500 or less records every year. There are 0-10 and 1-9 teams in playoffs. Get real!

Football schedule should loook like this:

1. 2 scrimmages

2. 10 games in 10 weeks

3. playoffs begin the following week

3A. Do away with football districts, and award playoff berths to top 6 teams in each region. Seeds 1 and 2 get first round byes. This would make first round games much more competitive, and also keep the bottom teams out. This would also mean teams with 3-6 seeds would have a better chance of actually winning a playoff game.

This eliminates 4 team districts that qualify all teams regardless of record. It would be okay to require playing every other team within the region, or limit these in region games to 7 to allow for 3 non-region or rivalry games. Ideally regions would have 8-10 teams. If your team finishes in the bottom half of the region, then you would play your 7 games starting with the last place team and working up the standings from the previous year. If you finish in the top half, then play the top team and work down the standings.

Let private play private and public play public. Private pays for their players. Let them have it and see who's money is the greenest!
