I can't blame Trevor for not wanting to come out- if you come out, you never know when you are going back in. After following CCH for 7 years, I still can't figure out Coach L's substitution patterns. Austin Hudepohl did not play the entire 2nd Half. Why? Who knows. Clearly, CovCath was having trouble breaking the press, but Coach L didn't give any one (specifically, any non-senior) the chance to break it.

As noted, this team has major, major issues breaking the press. Furthermore, Thelen was killing them down low, and his touches decreased significantly in the 2nd half. The Colonels have only 2 plays designated for big guys- the same 2 plays they had in 2005-2007- and they are extremely predictable. After Thelen killed them in the 1st quarter, they merely upped the pressure on the guards (specifically on the wing) and the Colonels could hardly get a shot off.

 

And before someone tells me, "How could Thelen not have had enough touches, he scored 20+?"- he probably only had 8 or 9 posts in the low post, and at least 6 of those came in the first quarter.

 

I love Coach L- but last night, it was clear that CCH was outcoached. St. X made adjustments, didn't turn the ball over as much (although I don't have the stats), set the tempo, and made their free throws. CovCath didn't do any of those things.

 

This is the reason I find it even more amazing that Maschinot is not in the game more. My understanding is that he has only been getting 1-2 minutes per game?? Is that correct? Anyone have any insights?

I saw "Neal" in the boxscore for X, I'm assuming Jeremiah?? He will help the Tigers, especially on defense and in transition.

 

Yes, Jermiah Neal ( Wootus) and #11 Wyatt Gray are back from football championship season and add much better depth to the X team.

I completely agree with the lack of respect for the coach. It's embarrassing to the School, Basketball Program, Coach, and Individual. There is no reason for that however once it began in that class of 06 to 07 it hasn't stopped.

I think the punishment for these occurrences needs to happen. Even if it means sitting a kid for a game. The message needs to be sent that you can't represent the program in that manner.

 

Here is a guess ... the kids show the coach no respect because their parents show the coach no respect. I will bet you very few of their parents back the coach up in decisions and question his moves when discussing last night's game.

Coach L is without a doubt the one single man that if I had a child who wanted to play basketball I would want to have as my child coach. Not a nicer, more Christian man, nor teacher of the game of basketball or of life, then Coach L.

 

You would need a calculator to add up all the outstanding young men, who are better adults, parents, husbands, leader of our community and Christians today, just becasue they were taught by Coach L be it in the classroom or on the hard wood.

I can't believe what I am reading here. Coach L was pretty hardcore back in the day. I can't imagine a player showing him disrespect

IMO part of the problem, as has been somewhat stated in a round about way is that the last few years have had more Srs on the team than should be, quite frankly several of these kids should have been cut. But with them having been around the program for 3 years, they are given almost automatic spots on the team. Part of the disrepect/trouble comes from the attitude that because they are Srs they should be guaranteed playing time. I applaud Coach L for trying to keep kids involved, and his loyalty to the older kids, but sometimes you need to make the hard decisions about who is going to help the team win. While you would love for HS sports to be more than just about winning, that is what most coaches are judged on. I am not saying there isn't a way to keep the kids around that want to be around, it may be having the discussion with them letting them know that realistically they are #12 or 13 on the depth chart and probably won't get much playing time. It then becomes their decision whether they want to hang around or not. If you look at most really strong BB teams, they have a 7-8 man rotation at best.

Absolutely. This team is deep, talented, and has plenty of senior leadership. A high ceiling, but plenty of work to do.

 

The issue at CCH as of right now is the guard play. Thelen is carrying the load and Wellbrock is the only one helping. Evans and Wilson seem to be the only ones who have stepped up scoring wise here and there but nothing is consistent.

 

IMO, the reason CCH has been declining is due to player development. The two leading scorers and most productive players for CCH this year are Thelen and Wellbrock both of which play AAU for Shining Stars. If you look at the rest of the roster I'm not so sure any of them play any AAU ball at all. Evans has but then again this is his first year playing on the High School team.

 

Now if you look at players such as Votel, Nestheide, Tierney, Grimes, Jacobs, Shover, Shmerge, and Bondick are all players who played aau and focused mainly on basketball. (Maile exception but just a gifted athlete and Bovard played football but also ended up playing college basketball) They were dedicated to getting better and most went on to play college and if not had the opportunity too. Look at this years team...Thelen is the only candidate for college ball and Wellbrock possibly.

 

The talent level, imo, has significantly dropped off. And when you don't have the talent you have to find ways to get around that. However, I think the player development by the coaching staff is poor because really Coach L never had to deal with this issue. He was blessed to have some really good players throughout his years at CCH and now he is in a situation where he just doesn't have those players. CCH year after year would just reload but that just hasn't been the case of late.

 

The players are developed in the summer. From what I can tell, there hasn't been a whole lot of summer participation. Building team chemistry and getting better is what the summers are for. By the new year, you should have a pretty good idea of where you stand on the team.

When these young men see grown adults treating coaches with disrespect, then why would they ever give them the time of day? Even for as much tenure as Coach L has, when he came in after Coach T, he brought a different style, and that style has never been accepted by many of the Cov Cath basketball parents in particular. By choosing to treat Coach L as they have, these parents have not had nearly the impact on the mindset and effort put forth by Coach L as much as they have spoiled the mindsets and efforts put forth by their sons.

While I agree it starts at home, if the coach allows the disrespect, it is now his problem as well.

 

I think 90% of the people will support you if you are fair and consistent with discipline. If he would have benched the player who refused to come out of the game, and not put him back in, win or lose he would have earned respect.

 

While you want to win every game, the nature of Ky HS basketball is that with the exception of district Seeding games, the rest of the regular season is to get better for the post season. More importantly it is part of the process of developing team work and instillng the values you want the young men to have in life.

I know the topic has gotten more towards the repect, or lack of respect shown to coach, but I am still curious as to what may be the reason behind the lack of time being given to some guys. If the team is having trouble breaking the press and some of the things you guys are saying, then why would coach not try some of the juniors? why stick with the Sr's?

I think part of the issue may be how close the talent level is from the #3 spot to the end of the bench. Thelan (bread) and Wellbrock (butter) need to be on the court as much as possible (assuming no foul trouble, good mental spirits, due respect to Coach L, etc.) Beyond that, the talent is fairly fungible. Player "X" has a great game but then follows up with a game that is...ah...less great (in keeping with the Christmas spirit of good will & charity). There may not be alot of A or A - players on the squad, but there is an army of B to B+ talent. This is both a good and a bad problem. Coach L, the team, the parents and fans will just have to work through the issue.
