As usual, VOR makes a very good point. In recent years, I've been shockingly surprised by the attitude of some parents in the Cov Cath community towards some of the coaches (past and present)...and I'm not just referencing the basketball team.

When these young men see grown adults treating coaches with disrespect, then why would they ever give them the time of day? Even for as much tenure as Coach L has, when he came in after Coach T, he brought a different style, and that style has never been accepted by many of the Cov Cath basketball parents in particular. By choosing to treat Coach L as they have, these parents have not had nearly the impact on the mindset and effort put forth by Coach L as much as they have spoiled the mindsets and efforts put forth by their sons.

One bad apple can spoil the whole bunch.

I agree that there is a lack of respect shown by parents and players. However, this problem is not limited to Cov Cath. I see it at every game I'm at, and at all levels.

If you want to see players' attitudes change, first change the parents.

I think part of the issue may be how close the talent level is from the #3 spot to the end of the bench. Thelan (bread) and Wellbrock (butter) need to be on the court as much as possible (assuming no foul trouble, good mental spirits, due respect to Coach L, etc.) Beyond that, the talent is fairly fungible. .

This has to the first time the word "fungible" has been used on BGP.

I had to look it up...

a commodity that is freely interchangeable with another in satisfying an obligation

of goods or commodities; freely exchangeable for or replaceable by another of like nature or kind in the satisfaction of an obligation

Player "X" has a great game but then follows up with a game that is...ah...less great (in keeping with the Christmas spirit of good will & charity). There may not be alot of A or A - players on the squad, but there is an army of B to B+ talent. This is both a good and a bad problem. Coach L, the team, the parents and fans will just have to work through the issue.

I agree to a point, but if the guys on the floor can not get the ball up the court, why not try some others?? Coach talked about the athletes on this years team during blue white, meetings, etc, and there are a number he has not used at all. He has guys he said would only dress for Varsity, and they are begging to play JV to get some minutes.

I thought all of the JRs that weren't getting much run in varsity were getting JV minutes. Who isn't?

They had to beg coach to play JV when it became apparent that they were not going to see the floor much in Varsity. Look at the varsity picture and then the JV picture. There are several who were not in the JV picture who are now only getting minutes in JV. They had to beg coach to let them play JV as he was not going to let them. Cubby is getting some minutes in varsity but I understand he would like to play some JV but coach will not let him. I for one would think that the JV minutes would help Cubby. But, I am not a coach. Again though, if the guys in Varsity can not get the ball up the floor, let some of the other guys do it. I have not been to many games this year, so I do not know for sure, but this is what I was told is happening.

I agree that, if a player isn't getting significant minutes in the Varsity, he's not getting any better on the bench. Let the kids get the minutes.

If I were coach (I'm not):

-- Juniors could be cut, but Seniors can not.

-- Any player not seen as CRUCIAL to varsity plays JV, except Seniors

-- Discipline is #1 -- if you can't deal with it, I can't deal with you.

In Cov Cath's case this year, there were a few juniors cut, including a couple who played both Frosh and Sophmore years. I do not think any Sr's were cut. I totally agree about kids not getting any better sitting on the bench, watching varsity games, and not playing JV (as Jr's) I am real curious to see how things go the rest of this year with this group. This team very well could be facinbg the same thing the next few years where the guys playing varsity will be very limited in their varsity experience levels. For example, next years team could see Thelen as the only guy who got significant minutes this year.

Correction -- Seniors who played as a Junior could not be cut.
