I do not think Couch was a flop. He was playing on an expansion team and eventually led them to a playoff victory. Injuries are what killed Couch.

And don't forget the God awful offensive line he had.

Look into drafting a project QB this year? Maybe the 4th round or so. Someone with a big arm and NFL potential. Carson is really starting to worry me for a variety of reasons. I know futurecoach will bash this thread for the next decade, but what is your opinion?

What are some of your reasons? I don't like the Bengals, but I watch them if they are on-which is all the time around here, and I've always thought of them as a joke without Palmer playing. I think he makes them good, maybe not so much this season, but there is a reason they don't perform too well when he is hurt IMO. I know injuries are an issue and drafting a quarterback would be a good precaution to take, but couldn't the same thing be achieved by picking up a solid veteran back up such as Jeff Garcia? I think you have to act in the best interest of the team, but I wouldn't do it in a way that makes it seem like you are forcing the best quarterback in your franchise's recent history out of town.

1. He has proven to be injury prone. Although none had to do with durability issues some people are just injured too much.

2. Possibility the elbow is hurt more than we know.

3. After refusing surgery last year to simply chance the elbow healing I question how committed he is.

I realize this is off topic, as much as this thread is, but I agree with several that Tebow will not be playing qb in the nfl. He is a winner and a great athlete and he will get his shot, just not at qb.

No body knows what will happen until it happens. Look how many people said Pat White wouldn't play QB in the NFL. I know he doesn't play alot at that posistion yet but that is still his primary position. Since the Wildcat offense is becoming more and more widespread throughout the NFL, I can see Tebow getting drafted and pretty much doing what Pat White is doing right now in a Wildcat offense. I can even see him getting drafted as a regular QB. I mean not all running QB's need to switch positions to play in the NFL. There is a guy out there named Michael Vick, and to my knowledge he's had a very successful football career so far. :thumb:

If the Bengals were out there throwing it 40 times a game, then perhaps I'd be a little more worried about how Carson's arm is holding up. But, I like what I've seen (when they do throw!) so far this year from him.

Here's the problem that I see...and I can see two possible causes. How does a team lead the NFL in 3rd down conversions of 10 yards or more (whe the opposition is 95% certain you're going to PASS)....and NOT throw the ball down the field on first or second down??

Possible Cause #1: Play calling from Bratkowski. (See probably a dozen other threads over the past 4 months!) Enough said.

Possible Cause #2: Trust issues with Carson. THIS is what would worry me right now. Yes, we don't have Chris Henry stretching the field. However, the guy was only a threat because Carson threw him the ball...regardless of how tight the coverage might be. You've got to give your receivers an opportunity to make a play for you. Obviously he had that trust with TJ (especially on 3rd down). But, I'm beginning to wonder if he's not checking down on just about every pass play that doesn't have Chad as the #1 target.

And here's the thing...it's a catch-22. Carson may not throw these other receivers until he trusts them...but he's not going to trust them until he throws them the ball and sees that they can catch it. Terry Bradshaw probably had 50-75% of the physical talent that Carson has....but, he knew if he just threw it, Stallworth and Swann were more than likely going to go up and get it.

I think the Bengals have good speed with the receivers we've got. But, something's got to change in the philosophy of using them downfield. I mean if we can move the ball thru the air on third down when the defense has their nickel or dime package in there, with the linemen pinning their ears back...how in the heck can we not do it when they're in their base defense?

Now that I'm off my soapbox...back to the question of this thread. Finding a budding star in the later rounds of the draft is purely a crapshoot. You could find someone who's better than the current backups we've got...but, then again you could draft someone that you end up cutting at the end of camp. So, it'd not be a high priority for me, at this point in time.

1. This is all a moot point- an O-Line that can pass block fixes all. However, we are all overreacting because of timing- no one can stop the Viking's pass rush.

2. IMO, Tebow will be successful in the NFL, and at QB. But I'll take Carson now and for at least the next 3 years.

Wait a couple of years to draft a QB. I think they need to be looking for another quality WR. Anybody else wonder what this year could have been if they drafted Michael Crabtree instead of Smith? I know Smith is probably the better long term pick, but Crabtree could have helped a BUNCH.

How about if they drafted DeSean Jackson instead of Simpson.....

Draft Lock next year trade Carson to Cowboys for a package like they got from Minnesota for Herschel Walker.

Herschel Walker had about 10x the cred Carson Palmer has. It take two to tango, and Dallas is not that dumb. Carson would be a downgrade at QB.

How so? You really don't think Carson would do good there with more talent around him on offense, and more open offense? Do you honestly think Romo would do much better than what Carson has to deal with in the Bengals offense right now. I post in another thread, the numbers of other elite QB's that have had to play the same style offense that Carson has to play this year, and his numbers are right there with those guys. A system a team uses has all to do with if a QB is going to put up great numbers or not.

Carson can't hit these guys in practice. It's not that they're dropping balls (well outside of Coats), it's that he is under and overthrowing them even in practices. That has nothing to do with them being able to get open.
