There are AP outlets all over the state to make nominations. As Jim Schue mentioned, why should it be up to me or somebody in Somerset or Middlesboro to make sure they nominate the Jefferson County kids just in case all their outlets dropped the ball? I nominate every kid from my area who I think may even be close to consideration, and it's up to everybody else to do the same. Again, we're talking nominations here, not the final vote.

 

I absolutely do every bit of statewide research I can when making selections on the final ballot, and I'd like to think most others do too. However, it's up to the players' local outlets to get them on that ballot to begin with. You can't expect some writer in the mountains to nominate 20 Louisville kids they've never seen just on the off chance the several members in Lousiville all fail to hold up their end of the deal.

 

 

 

Sorry, but there's no bias there. As I said in the first post, it's all about a nomination process that fails a lot of kids if everybody doesn't pull their weight. I'll come right out and say there clearly weren't enough Louisville kids nominated to be on the ballot. I absolutely would have voted for more if they were. I doubt I'm the only one.

 

I'm not going to go into much more detail, but because I'm still able to go back and log in to the voting page, here's an example. Because they were mentioned in the thread, I looked it up and there were only two St. X players and none from Trinity on the ballot at all. I don't have time to go do a breakdown by school, but a quick glance shows that there weren't many more Louisville kids period.

 

Maybe a bunch of Louisville area outlets didn't nominate anybody. Maybe they all happened to nominate the same handful of kids. But contrary to what people may think, there aren't a bunch of voters sitting around the state saying "Hey, I'm really going to stick it to those Louisville schools."

 

Thanks for the information, you're obviously closer to the situation than I. Can you give us some more details about the nomination process:

1. Can any media outlet, the CJ for example, nominate as many players as they want(could they for example nominate 100 players?)

2. Does a single nomination put a player on the ballot?

3. How many votes does each "media outlet" get? For example, does the Middlesboro Daily News get 1 vote, the CJ 1 vote, etc...?

4. How many players from Louisville were nominated?

5. How many players from Bell County were nominated?

 

 

And I wouldn't expect voters to sit around and say "Hey, I'm really going to stick it to those Louisville school..." But, just because its unspoken doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Should we expect the AP outlets to attempt to research and figure out who is actually deserving of being all state rather than just assume the best players they personally viewed were indeed the best in the state?

 

You can expect it all you want, but the fact is that tallying up the AP ballot tends to be a pretty low item on the priority pole, especially in tough economic times that have hit media outlets especially hard.

Maybe true except that isn't "my side", that isn't a point I was commenting on or even something I care about one way or another. Hence the reason I stated that Katfish was missing the point when he quoted me and when off on the subject tagent rant.

 

The credibility of the AP team was my point.

I could not agree with Papa more. Ricky Buckler was the leading rusher in the state. The fact that he is not even an honorable mention would make any sensible person question the selection of all state players. There is NO way it can be justified. That is a fact. What a shame for a really deserving young man.

 

The reality is the big "names" (Collinsworth) and the big name "schools" (Highlands) get the attention and the votes. How can a kid who rushed for less than 1,000 yards be second team all state when a kid who rushed for nearly 3,000 yards and over 40 td's does not even get honorable mention?? The other kid has a recognizable name and is from a more well known and successful school, that's why. Is that fair?? NO!

 

Austin Collinsworth is a heck of a player but all state is not supposed to be based upon potential or who your dad is, it is supposed to be on performance.

Not taking anything away from what Rees accomplished, but Antonio had over 3,000 total yards, over 50 total TDs, was the 2A player of the year and selected to 1st Team All-state. But as you said, I am slo being a homer on this.

 

According to the article, he only had 2,227 yards and 38 touchdowns, but I don't think that counted the playoffs, did he have nearly 800 yards rushing in the playoffs? If not, then he didn't have the 3,000 yards rushing as you mentioned. The Player of the Year was for NKY - not the state, If the AP could not see putting him on 1st Team All-State (even though he was the NKY player of the year) why do you think he would be selected as Mr. Football?

Rees MacShara ended his 15 game season that was capped off with a 4A State Championship with 3,073 rushing yards on 269 carries with 43 rushing tds becoming only the 6th Kentuckian to ever rush for over 3,000 yards in a season. He had 450 yards receiving from 22 receptions and 5 tds. He had 3 interceptions and returned 1 for a td. He also had 46 tackles on defense when the playoffs began.

 

 

In all he finished with 3,523 total yards and 50 total tds for the year.

 

Rees MacShara had an amazing career at Boyle County High School. He has been a joy to watch since he took took over the rb duties as a sophomore. I was happy for him and the entire football team when they won the 4A State Championship this year. Regardless of what individual accolades he may or may not receive, he will always be my favorite Boyle County Rebel and the fact that he will graduate a State Champion is far more important to him than any individual accolades he may or not receive. He will always be treated as Mr. Football/First Team All Stater here in Boyle County.

 

He did win the WLEX18 High School Player of the Year Award, but the fans voted for that one.:thumb:

There were some very good RBs this year and maybe that is why he was selected as second team and not first. I do believe it could have went any direction with the four RBs that were selectedas first or second team all-state - any of the four could have a good arguement for being on the first team.

 

The team championship means a lot more than Mr. Football or other accolades (as you mentioned), but Rees is not the only one who led his team to a championship, nor is he the only one who has had a great career in addition to a great senior year.

 

IMO, all of the great competition for Mr. Football this year makes it that much more of an accomplishment.

I said all along Antonio Andrews would win Mr. Football, I was just also saying all year that Rees was just as deserving.

 

It's hard for a small market player such as Rees to overcome the name recognition that Hayden and Simpson received from being out of Lexington and Northern Kentucky if he doesn't get a chance to showcase his abilites against those players' teams, IMO. There were people out of Lousiville who don't even know who Rees MacShara is let alone how great of a player he is. It's all good though. We are and always will be very proud of Rees.

In my opinion, Andrews won it because of his versatility. High numbers in rushing, high numbers in passing, kicked off, kicked XP, he did a lot of different things and excelled at them all.

 

Not taking anything away from the other finalist, because they were all good. Andrews just did a lot of different things, and did them well.

Like I said Im a Homer, I wanted rees to win Mr. football, are there other deserving players, absolutely...but I wanted Rees, but 2nd teams? Thanks Purple for the exact numbers. I cant argue with the Mr Football award, but second team? Rees is an amazing Kid and Im sure that pretty ring on his finger will mean more than anything else!
