My thoughts on Kelly to Notre Dame

Featured Replies

I don't know anything about Butch Jones but you can only go to the well so much. We will see who they try to get.

:idunno::confused:

Somebody started a thread wanting Kelly to come to Kentucky a few weeks back, that is all.

Is there a good way to handle a situation like this?

Can a coach do anything other than deny the rumors and do what's best for his team? By issuing denials, he limits the distraction to some extent and keeps his team focused and on board.

So tell me, would the players prefer the coach be completely honest and run the risk of a divided, unfocused team taking the field for the last 2-3 games of a potential undefeated season (and possible BCS Title game appearance). Or, would they prefer to be "mislead" (to be kind), and continue forward with a united and more focused team?

Simply stated, the coach is leaving anyway...would they rather be 12-0, playing in the Sugar Bowl with an interim coach, perhaps because they were lied to? Or, would they rather be 11-1, 10-2, watching Pittsburgh in the Sugar Bowl?

As someone said, this is the nature of the beast. You can debate whether its right or wrong, but its the system in place, and its never pretty.

What I find disappointing is that he met with ND officials before the regular season ended. I can see after the Pitt game, but before? That not right in my opinion...and UC has the right to be angry over that.

I know I was angry to hear rumors that Tubby (or his agent) had spoke to Minnesota before his last season ended.

I was mad that he didn't start talking to them sooner!

Just kidding.

Why couldn't ND and Kelly secretly agree to his hiring but not announce anything until the bowl season is over. How could one month make much of a difference? This doesn't seem very fair for the Bearcat players for him to leave with the biggest game of their school's history in a few weeks.

National signing day is fast aproaching and there is a dead period before signing day. Every day is important in recruiting.

That would make a HUGE difference. A poor recruiting class can knock down a program in no time.

As others have said, you can't afford to do that recruiting wise. Kiffin came in sort of late I believe, but he went after a lot of questionable character kids and was able to sell them on his program quickly. Look at Bryce Brown and NuKeese Richardson, two guys ND would not want going forward.

ND can still have a good class IMO, but you have to get to work now, because of the recruiting dead period. A coach just getting started in January at ND is going to really be behind IMO.

Also that would hurt Cincy going forward. In that scenario, Jones probably goes to Marshall, and other targets either take other jobs or decide it's too late to leave for a job like UC. JMO.

Also if UC has a problem with these they do not need to hire someone like Butch Jones IMO. Don't hire a guy that is up and coming, hire a guy that is going to be there for the long term. Go and get an average coach that isn't going to have BCS success and make money for the school, because no relatively young up and coming coach is going to reach UC and say "this is it, this is what I've always wanted, I am so thankful to be a coach in the Big East where an undefeated season can't turn into a National Title". Maybe the next coach will have a little more integrity, but don't count on it. With the amount of success UC had this season it was a tough situation for everyone involved.

On the bright side, at least it wasn't announced by ESPN and the players find out at halftime of the Bowl game.

^ A perfect example of how much control coaches have over these things.

:thumb: I wish I could say I was kidding, but I agree wholeheartedly with your entire statement. Of course, what credibility do I have left nai.

Changing the recruiting period wouldn't help much. A bad (or bowl ineligible) team is going to get a new coach as soon as possible. If the coach's are willing to accept the job, they should start working immediately.

You sign a contract and you're theirs. No reason to pretend to put your best foot forth when your heart isn't it or your mind is somewhere else.

As a player, I wouldn't want him to coach me if he didn't want to be here. See ya coach, thanks for giving us the opportunity to be walked all over. I'd feel betrayed but I'd forgive him if it got me to the next level. :D
