The BCS is set up around big names. If he builds them up and stays at this levels for a couple more seasons there's no doubt they're competing for a national title. Maybe even next season if they can start off high enough in the rankings.

 

I can't imagine the letdown for the players. To pull it all together and have the best season ever in UC history. To be going to the Sugar Bowl, the biggest bowl achievement for UC. And then to have the leader abandon them? Just a shame. I hope the team can use this as a rallying point, to put their best effort as a team on the field, and whip Florida.

Would we even really care if it was a team that was close to here. The way he left was bad, but I can't imagine being mad that he would take the job.

He couldn't stay longer because if he's going to leave, both ND and UC need to get coaching staffs together and get to recruiting.

Notre Dame is 4-5 years away from even thinking about going undefeated.

I'm not even a fan of UC but have been attracted to them alot this year with the great season. I just can't believe BK left his team before the bowl game. Why could he not wait until it was over. Also, he seemed to be very shady during the whole deal.

 

Because Edsall from UConn would be ND's coach if Kelly decided to wait a month. The door doesn't stay open long, and you gotta go in while its open if you want to go.

This is what coaches do...they work their way up the ladder in hopes of landing one of the marquee jobs in the sport. Kelly made it to the top. Its hard for me to begrudge a man for that.

I understand it is a business and Brian Kelly made a business decision. I just don't like the system and how these types of things play out.

Maybe if the NCAA would move back signing day a month this would happen as much. He has to get to recruiting. If he were to coach UC he would lose an entire month at ND. He had to go now.

I won't argue there...it would be nice if the NCAA would step in and declare a dead period of some sort until after the bowl season.

 

I think something is lost when teams like Cincinnati have to end their dream season by playing in the Sugar Bowl with an interim coach.

 

If it sets a teams recruiting back a little because they had to wait a few weeks for a coach, then so be it.

If they're making a coaching change, then its going to take more than an extra month of recruiting preparation to get them where they want to be. The effect wouldn't submarine the program or the coaching tenure.

I hope Kelly 5 years down the road made the wrong decision. I understand the business side of it but how can you walk out on a 12-0 team thats about to play in the biggest game UC football as ever seen. How can you walk out on seniors that battled for you and especially that guy named Gilyard who seems to me like the all american(not just football) kind of guy. Why couldnt he wait, as ESPN stated 22 days. Forget that noise.

I'm also tired of hearing about Notre Dame football and how important it is. ND is not revelant and hasnt been much since I have been alive. I guess maybe its different for some other people on here who has seen them suceed but for me I don't care what they accomplished in 1985 or whenever they were good.

 

When were you born? For the vast majority of college football fans, the days of Notre Dame being relevant aren't completely forgotten. They were relevant in the 60's and 70's. They went on a trememdous run from '88 to '93. For Brian Kelly, those days were when he was growing up and also when he started coaching. For him, ND will always be ND, just like USC will always be USC, the Yankees will always be the Yankees, and the Celtics will always be the Celtics. Those are the jobs that you take, b/c when you were growing up (and for years and years before that) they were the "IT" jobs. In time it may change. Once your generation starts coaching, Florida and other jobs will be "It" jobs.

I have to say as an ND fan, this doesn't feel right. It's like you stole your friend's girlfriend. Sure, she's pretty, and you'll have a great time together, but you can never be completely happy. That's how I feel about it.

To stay at the same level he is at every year, is something that would be very hard to do at UC. He would always have them as one of the better team in the Big East, but it wouldn't be all the time where he will have one of the best teams in the country. It would have been very hard to stay at this level. While at Notre Dame if he gets them back up to that level, there is a lot better chance of him being able to keep them at that level and competing for the National Title in most years.

I know I wish we could have gotten another great coach like a Nick Saban, Pete Carroll, or Florida because I have no problem taking a coach from teams like that. I know I liked seeing UC do good, even though I am not really a UC fan. But he was the best coach for Notre Dame to get, its a shame that he just had to be at UC though.
