Hey guys, I am working on a research paper in my Methods to Political Inquiry. I am looking into the BCS, and possible alternatives to the current system and other possible reasons as to why it is still in place despite its controversial nature. Part of the criterion for the paper is to employ different research methods-apart from the research style we are mainly using-so I am using a survey.

 

If you guys would be so kind as to read over these five answers and answer them for me, I would greatly appreciate it. I aim to try and get anywhere from 20-40 responses, so if you read this thread, please answer the survey questions. Most of the questions only require either a “Yes” or “No” answer, but if you would like to elaborate on your responses, feel free.

1. Do you like the current Bowl Championship Series? The BCS allows for regular season games to be season defining games. The playoffs occur during the regular season, you have to play good teams to get into the title and you have to win. In College Basketball, NBA, MLB, even some NFL games you get the feeling that teams don't care during a regular season game. 1 loss doesn't kill a team in any of those sports, so CFB's season means much more to me.

2. What are some of the elements of the Bowl Championship Series that you like? I love the excitement. No other sport matches college football for me. Like I said, the BCS makes every game huge (most of the time).

3. What are some of the things that you dislike about the Bowl Championship Series format? I think that all teams that want to compete for a BCS MNC should have to play at least one road game against another BCS team that isn't in their conference. I wouldn't care to see the NCAA mandate a week in the season where they will chose the matchups, giving each team a non-conference game that actually means something.

4. What post-season format would you like to see in place? If they are going to add anything, I'd say a plus one. In an 8 team playoff nothing would really change IMO. More games mean more injuries, and I don't think that a team like Boise would be able to survive as well as a Texas would. If Boise (or another Non-BCS team) made it to the MNC game they would have a shot because it's one game. A playoff really isn't going to improve their chances that much. Just like the NCAA tourney, it would be about depth. SEC schools (+maybe USC) would win most years IMO, which is about what we have now so I see no reason to change.

5. What reason or reasons do you believe keep the Bowl Championship Series in place? Money. Prestige. A tourney devalues Bowl games. Making a bowl game like the Rose Bowl part of a playoff system takes away from the pagentry of college football IMO.

It is not about finding a true champion. They only want the big name schools involved. It is about money and not about the kids that play or the game it's self.

16 team playoff.

The big Conferences are greedy and they are in control. So it won't change until one of them get the shaft on a regular basis.

It matches the #1 ranked team versus the #2 ranked teams in a championship game.

It doesn't necessarily match the two best teams; a team that gets better as the season goes along may be hurt by not being ranked high enough in the early season (Auburn, 2004) or by losing an early game before they gel and become the final product (Washington Huskies, 2000). There is also the obvious problem of conference affiliation that leaves out quality teams from non qualifying conferences from competing for the national title (Utah, 2008; Boise State 2006; TCU this year?).

Money- the book Bowls, Polls and Tattered Souls by Stewart Mandel outlines the monetary ramifications of losing the BCS very well.

No, rather not have computers impacting sports.

 

2. What are some of the elements of the Bowl Championship Series that you like? None of it. I do not like asking 18-22 year old kids to be perfect each week. You can lose up to 4-5 times in college basketball and still get a nice seed and control your own destiny.

 

3. What are some of the things that you dislike about the Bowl Championship Series format? A team like a UC, TCU, Boise, (Utah) last year, can peform as well as a UF/TX/Bama each week but won't a shot at the title because their not as iconic.

 

4. What post-season format would you like to see in place? A playoff of course. I think they should have the chase like Nascar. Say the 8-16 top teams enter a playoff for all the marbles.

3) At this point, the BCS bowls are heavily biased and lean to conference allegiances such as the Rose Bowl to the Pac-10 and Big-10, etc etc and should be more aligned to the fact as who are the best teams in the country and not the best teams from each respective conference. Also the BCS games don't always determine who the best team in the country as some bias does come into the picture as people can manipulate the system somewhat. However, some of that can be rectified by going to a playoff format (although there will be some bias still and manipulation going on, the best team will generally win out...)

Agree with this post entirely. Would like to see 16 team playoff drop regular season to 10 or 11 games. Use bigger bowl games as playoff games and use diffferent big bowl as Championship Game each year.
