Basically, what kind of dog food do you feed your dog(s)?

 

I have a pug who is a very picky eater (odd for a pug) and I can't seem to find a brand that he really enjoys. He eats when he gets really hungry, but he doesn't go crazy over any food we've tried so far. He's not underweight, but he could use another pound or two.

He goes nuts over "wet" food, but canned dog food is more expensive, plus it tends to make waste cleanup a little more difficult. I would prefer to give him dry food, so what brand does your dog like?

Currently, my dog is apparently overweight, so we're using Iams weight control. However, what he ABSOLUTELY loves is Natural Balance, either the Beef or Lamb formulas. Turkey upsets his stomach for some reason, and he wouldn't touch the Duck formula. It makes for softer stool, but not as bad as "wet" food. It comes in a roll like sausage. It's a bit expensive, but my dog is a picky eater and I had to do something when he came back from Camp Highlands and wouldn't eat for a week. :lol:

 

My dog is like yours, he will only eat if he's really hungry. He also won't eat unless I'm home. I can put out food in the morning, and it's still there when I get home, untouched.

 

Considering how much walking we do, and how little he eats, I am scratching my head as to how he's managed to get to the overweight stage.

Could be due to giving him a "wet" (or whatever kind of roll) food. Usually, the wet or soft foods are higher in fat, so even if you give them less a lot less wet food than you would dry food, it could make them overweight.

 

In my experiences, it's hard for animals to lose weight just by changing over to a "weight control" food. I have an overweight cat that we've been giving "weight control" cat food to for over a year now and, if anything, I think it's made him fatter. The cats are also indoors, so it's hard for him to get a lot of exercise. Tried letting him out a few times and he freaks out when I let him outside; very skiddish, and I don't trust him being outside seeing how we live in an apartment complex with cars constantly driving around.

In addition to the switch in food, we've upped our walking even more, and I take him places late in the evening after dark where I can walk him off the leash and he can run. He seems to be slimming down. I'll probably walk him up to the vet Friday or Saturday for a weigh-in.

My Boxer (Cassie) is going on 14 years. She has maintained a near perfect weight and loads of energy, and is still going strong. 14 is VERY OLD for a Boxer. Other than a treat every now and then, Purina Puppy Chow (dry) is the only thing ever poured in her bowl. She has yet to complain.

Try mixing in wet with the dry.

Try adding water to your Gravy Train. It gives it the "gravy" taste and look and feel. Additionally, I used a brand called "EconoPet" or something like that from Kroger. It has a good mixture of different things and even though that was the cheapest, my dogs have liked it the best.

Purina "Little Bites" is the only thing my Jack Russell will eat. I know, he's weird.

Pedigree. Mix dry with chunky or slices.

Honestly though, it does make the food look more appealing. If I were a dog and I had to choose between plain Jane dry food, or wet, meaty, gravy food, I know which one I am taking...

OK....I can't believe I'm telling this....BBBBUUUUUTTTT......

 

 

When I was about 10, I was in charge of feeding our neighbor's dogs while they were out of town, and I fixed them up some Gravey Train and it smelled so good I did try it. :lol: It smells much better than it tastes.

Have tried this. He ate the wet food, leaving all the dry bits in or around the bowl.

Refuses to eat the Gravy Train with water added. Just lets it sit and solidify into some nasty looking mass. However, he will eat the Gravy Train dry if he's starving.

My Boston (10 mos) seems to like her Nutro Max. I don't know much about dog food but it's supposed to be very good for them.
