Has a 4 seed ever beaten a 1 seed???

Featured Replies

We may have been the 3rd seed in this one I'm not positive I was only 8 or 9 years old. I believe it was 1997 when Raceland traveled to NewCath and beat them on their home field. Some said Raceland was a 48 point underdog.

WOW, Shelby Co has played spoiler three times, coaches must know how to get those kids up for a game.

The first 4 seed to beat a 1 seed was Conner (beat Ashland) in 1993.
Lone Oak beat Owensboro Catholic as a four-seed in 1991.

2007 Montgomery County defeated Woodford County 16 to 7 in a very good game.

Best first round playoff game I ever saw was between a #4 seed and #1 seed. North Laurel #4 at Scott County #1. Scott County won with a TD in the final minute, but trailed for most of the game. While I was cheering for NL and Scott County won, it was still a great game. Big plays on defense by both teams the entire night. Rawlings Stadium is a great place for a HS playoff game as well.

I was at that game as well and it was a dandy. One of the better playoff games I've seen.

Dunbar (2-7). which is a #4 seed in 6A district 7, will play at GRC (6-3), which is a #1 seed in 6A district 8. This is a rematch of a regular season game in which Dunbar won 13-7.

I'm quite sure it happens just as frequently in the other classes as well.

Gonna have to disagree. You rarely see it anywhere but the state's largest classification (where it happens quite regularly).

Here we go again. You guys were a 3 seed, and with Sandfoss out, you were hardly a 48 pt. underdog. Raceland definitely was an underdog. When I saw Newport Stadium's field that night, and missing Timmy, I knew that we were going to be in for a battle considering the size differential. However, the year before, we were a #4 seed and beat you guys as a #1...by 41 pts.

Iroquois and Butler was special, I was at that game
Me too 5 route, I was the OC at Doss and I for one was glad to let our players see what happened when you overlook a playoff opponent. In the next game of that session we played Holy Cross and took care of business after learning the lesson from Butler.

That day was crazy at the old Farigrounds. It started out warm, about 75, at 3:30 when the game started. Then a cold front blew through during the 2nd half of the Butler/Iroquois game, suspending (for lightning) it for more than an hour. Finally we started our game about 9:15 PM and by the time the game was over, it was lightly snowing. Male and Central played the tail end of the triple-header that ended about 1 AM.

I'm guessing I just stepped on a very sensative subject. But calm down, I was like 7 years old:lol:. I didn't know the details to the story. And that doesn't surprise me at all that you beat us by 41 the year before, no need to brag. It's only happened 1,000,000,000 times in the history of the matchup. It happened twice in my career, and twice in my brothers. And any time Raceland goes into NewCath they are clearly the underdog. Which reminds me how much I hate that the playoffs for me weren't like they are now:madman::madman:

Yeah, it does happen more with the bigger classes, but still occasionally with the smaller ones:

Pre 6-A

1-A 1995-2006 (5 times)

2-A 1995-2006 (6 times)

3-A 1995-2006 (10 times)

4-A 1995-2006 (18 times)

Post 6-A

1-A 2007-2008 (none)

2-A 2007-2008 (1 time)

3-A 2007-2008 (none)

4-A 2007-2008 (none)

5-A 2007-2008 (1 time)

6-A 2007-2008 (4 times)

My Jr year we got hot and beat a 1 seed that had beaten us by almost 40 at our place earlier in the year. We won at their place in double OT without our starting QB! We might have been a 3 seed can't remember if it was that or a 4. Went on and pulled a couple more upsets and were 4 points from playing in the state championship where the team that beat us lost by 3! Anything is possible come playoff time!

stick1 remember that year very well. LC was a 3 seed beating a 2 seed Sheldon Clark in the first round, then beat Russell 18 -15 in double OT, then beat Mason Co a 4 seed 20-14 to advance to the Semi-finals.

I was kidding. They ran it down our throats that game. Their FB was enormous and their line was a lot bigger than ours. It was bad.

Hated the result, but it was a great game.
