Just read the description that Mustang put on the website. Tremendous come from behind win for the Mustangs. You have to feel good for those kids who stuck it out, going 0-20 in the first two years to now going to the playoffs.

What a show that was put on by both of these teams last night at Newport Stadium!! The first half was one of basically missed opportunities on both sides, and the first half ended with Brossart leading 9-7. And while I realize that this game was for the 4th (and last) playoff seed of a 1-A football district; the second half was still one for the books!!

 

Dayton came out firing on all cylinders and scored three touchdowns to widen the lead to 27-9, and with Brossart firing nothing but blanks offensively; many fans seemed headed for warmer surroundings. But the majority of fans gutted it out and were treated to a truly unbelievable finish. The Mustangs finally mustered some offense near the end of the quarter, much of it behind the determined running of Timmy Butts; and punched it in on a pass from Jessie Orth to Spencer Brown near the beginning of the 4th quarter. That along with the successful conversion narrowed the score to 27-16.

 

A Brossart defensive stand, was followed by a nice drive that finished with a Butts' 3 yd. TD run, and a 2-point conversion on a fake by holder Orth and a pass to FB John Schack to make the score 27-24. Dayton got the ball back and mounted a bit of a drive, but was stopped near mid-field when a BB defender knocked the ball loose from behind and Brossart recovered. Their drive for the go-ahead score stalled, but kicker Ryan Morrison connected on a 36 yd. field goal to tie the score at 27-27 with 7:06 to play.

 

Dayton then mounted a drive of their own to score the go-ahead TD, but the extra point kick failed and the Greendevils lead 33-27. Brossart then took the kickoff on a touchback if I remember correctly and after a play or two, Michael Whitford appeared to be stopped on a screen pass, but somehow broke loose up the sideline and was finally pushed out-of-bounds at the 5 yd. line. This set up a Butts' 1 yd. TD score, but the Mustangs returned the Dayton favor and missed their extra point try to leave the score tied at 33-33.

 

The Greendevils then mounted a game winning type drive which was thwarted when Luke Dischar stepped in front of a Dayton pass and returned the interception to mid-field. Three plays later with the clock running down, Brossart had moved the ball into field goal range with three quick pass completions by QB Jessie Orth to Whitford. With the Mustangs moving to the run to better position a field goal attempt with time running out, RB Timmy Butts decided that a field goal attempt would not be necessary and took matters into his own hands. On a 18 yd. run that can only be called sheer determination, he shed would-be tacklers and finished with a swan dive into the end zone for the winning score with only 12 seconds remaining.

 

Congratulations to the Mustangs on their program's first ever playoff berth and to Dayton for a great game that no one deserved to lose!!

On the other hand what has happened to Dayton football? I remember about 2 years ago Dayton was loaded, then they just dropped off.

Bowman did not play and probably will not play the rest of the season. The young man got himself in some trouble off the field. He's a good young man and hopefully will learn from his mistake.

IMO. I think Dayton should have atleast 4 wins this season maybe five. They are no Beechwood Or even A Bellevue this year. But they are not a 5th place team in this division. I know they have some Athletes. Last year I seen a few JV-Soph games and they looked like the had some good runners and a decent QB that seen the field pretty good.These Guys Havent done to well this year. Hopefully just growing pains.Anybody else know who comes back to this team next year?

Just one of the disadvantages of being a small 1A school. You could be very good for a year or two, then just as quickly drop back off. These schools go through cycles, and also sometimes not having enough numbers hurt too.

Someone, maybe Ryan Ernst, listed Brossart in the pre-season as a team to watch. I am happy that we lived up to the prediction.

 

While we are fully cognizant that we are light years away from running with the big dogs, we have certainly come strides.

 

Last season we didn't win a varsity or JV game. This year the varsity has posted five wins and the JVs were 4-1 or 5-1. Our first year Junior High Colts were 2-6, but lost several games within five points and made the small-school playoffs.

 

Last night's game was perhaps the most amazing turnaround that I have ever witnessed in all my years of following Brossart Athletics. Dayton owned the third quarter, outscoring our guys 20-0, without our gaining a first down until our last possession of the quarter. I was having Ludlow flashbacks when we were outscored 35-0 after leading 14-0.

 

Last night by capitalizing on Dayton mistakes and running and passing the ball effectively we were able to put up 31 points and come back to win the game. Timmy Butts, who had scored the first touchdown in the program's history in a JV game four years ago at Holy Cross, scored four touchdowns including the biggest touchdown in our short history with 12 seconds remaining to propel the Mustangs into the post-season.

 

It was a great night to be a Mustang!

Wow!! What a shocker! I honestly thought Dayton would win this game and when I heard they were up 27-9 at the beginning of the 4th, I figured it was over.

 

Great job by Brossart and their coaching staff! It's a great feeling knowing that you live to play another week.

 

I am sure Bellevue fans are hoping for another upset victory!
