6. Breathitt County at Magoffin County

7. Russell at 1A #10 Raceland

8. Union County vs. McLean County

9. Henry County at Spencer County

10. North Oldham at Western Hills

I believe that 2A's top 10 would win more games head-to-head in a series with the 3A teams. What an amazingly weak class.

For a top 10, yes, this is a pretty weak (overall) bunch. But it should make for a very exciting/competitive post-season.

I think that this is a pretty balanced group of teams. Nobody seems to be the clear favorite to win it all. Everyone keeps saying the that 3A is weak, but I look at it as being the most competitive. Not every class has perennial powers. let this kids enjoy being ranked wherever it may be. It's a competitive situation for these high school and it's good for high school football. May the best team win. GOOD LUCK GUYS

I like Somerset at four. They are very deserving of that ranking and they will beat Jackson County to finish the regular season undefeated. Watch out for these guys come playoff time! :eyeonyou:

I think you can take the top four teams, put them in a hat, and make a case for however they shake out.

But hasn't everyone Jackson Co played beat them?:D

How does Mason Co drop?

Mason drops?

Actually, this is one of the things I like about the BGP rankings...now, we can sit and debate Mason vs. Belfry "till the cows come home," but the fact that a team CAN DROP despite winning is something that should be possible in a credible poll.

For just about forever, one of the biggest gripes against the AP poll has been the fact that - so long as you WON - your starting position was pretty much your "floor". So...get yourself ranked #1 in the pre-season poll, and you pretty much didn't have to prove anything to stay #1, so long as you won.

I think the BGP pollsters are getting a more solid picture of these teams as the season goes on, and it makes sense to me that Belfry can - arguably - be ranked ahead of Mason County...

With eight games' worth of evidence now, Mason is undefeated, but has had precious little opportunity to prove themselves against quality opposition. To their credit, they came through when they did face a top 10 opponent, beating Russell at home. But on the other hand, the Royals have shown a troublesome inability to stop the run, allowing well over 200 yards rushing per game - against a very average schedule. In the win over Russell, Russell was able to rally despite being very one-dimensional (only 12 yards passing).

Belfry doesn't sport the same unblemished record at 6-2, but the Pirates have defeated several of the better teams, including Letcher County Central, Pike County Central, Whitley County (by 30!), and a very impressive 21 point win over top 10 Sheldon Clark - a game in which Belfry allowed just 115 yards of total offense to a team that averages over 30 points per game.

Belfry's two losses were very respectable, and both came in the first three weeks of the season - by 7 to 2A #3 Prestonsburg (8-0) and by a mere 2 points to 5A top 10 Ashland.

So...I think what the BGP pollsters are saying is that - as the season has moved along - Belfrey's body of work has been a bit more impressive than Mason's.

Personally, I think Somerset should be above Mason County, too, but McPapa has a good point about the top four...you can make a case for those four ranked any which way you want.

Looking at Somerset and their schedule, I don't think they can beat any of the top 3.

What is your reasoning that Somerset should be ahead of Mason?

Obviously, the best way to compare is if they had played, but they haven't, so I start looking at a lot of factors, each of which contributes a little bit to the overall picture...

Common opponents: Both beat Danville very early in the season at home; Somerset slightly outperformed Mason, defeating Danville 48-7 while Mason won, 48-21. Slight edge to Somerset.

Both are undefeated. Both have defeated 4A and 5A teams, but Somerset's win over 5A Pulaski County - a team getting some votes in some polls - would appear to be the best victory over a larger school. Slight edge to Somerset.

Common opponents who have common opponents... Somerset beat 3A Garrard County, 34-20, two weeks ago. Garrard County beat Rowan County on a neutral field by 6. Mason struggled to defeat Rowan by two in Maysville. Comparing scores like this always has a lot of drawbacks, but it's useful to help build an overall picture...slight advantage to Somerset (they easily handled Garrard, who beat Rowan by about the same margin as Mason beat Rowan...)

Both teams feature prolific (36+ ppg) offenses and can hurt you with both the run and the pass. But Somerset has been a bit more stingy on defense, giving up a mere 13 ppg, while Mason has given up an average of 236 rushing yards per game - despite facing a very average slate of opponents. Slight advantage: Somerset

Statistically, both starting QBs have tremendous TD:INT ratios; and both teams are averaging 5-7 yards per carry. Both feature several quality receivers, but on the ground, Mason pretty much depends on one runner; Somerset features a multi-headed monster with the running game featuring several players who have contributed significantly. If there's a difference here, it's that nearly half of Mason's TDs have been scored by one player. Edge: Pretty much even.

So...while none of the above points by themselves make me a huge Somerset fan over Mason County...all combined together, it begins to paint a picture that makes me pick Somerset slightly ahead of Mason County...

Well said, I'll still take Mason at #2. IMO
