Rival games and schools!

Featured Replies

Does anyone else feel that a good rival between two good programs is healthy?

Or, does this bring unnecessary tension to an already tough sport?

Please give your thoughts and reasons!!!

My thoughts on this is like the one between Monroe County and Green County somtimes can get out of control come game week. Not so much the players and coaches sometimes, but the diference of opinions between the fans and communities!!! It can get down right nasty in public and we all know it get get really out of hand on the web!!!!!:ohbrother:

I don't know. When Danville and Boyle were in the same classification and Smith was rebuilding the Rebel program, the rivalry got nasty as more was at stake than just "bragging rights." After the two teams when into opposite classes, the rivalry stayed heated but it seemed to lose the "hatred" and "bitterness" that came with playoff elimination.

Just my take.

This is a good time to ask this question for NKY. With the Boone vs Ryle game. Ryle is still a young school. And before it was open these kids would be going to Boone County. Most of the Ryle coaches went to or coached at Boone. And until this year this was the game that would give the number one seed in the playoffs. Throw out the records for this game, this is a war!! ( In a good way )

Great topic for this week with alot of Rivals facing off against eachother! I love rivals it's one of the best things out there to push someone to their maximum potential.

Rivals are part of everything, not just in sports but in anything. Even something as simple as a coworker battling against you for you for a promotion. A classmate striving for your head of class spot in academics. It's part of what drives you to achieve above and beyond expectations.

Life is great when Bowling Green whips up on Warren Central.:D

Ryle Boone

At Garrard County, we've went through several "rivals" over the last 20 years. To start with the big rival was Harrodsburg. These two squared off in Class A for years until Garrard got too big and moved to AA in 1997. Both schools were in the same basketball district as well, but it always seemed like a clean, respectful rivalry.

After moving to AA, Garrard picked up a regular district opponent in Mercer County. These two had always been hated rivals in basketball and it was similar in football. It seemed like it was a little more heated on the gridiron than Harrodsburg had been. Unfortunately, when Mercer and Harrodsburg consolidated and the new school went to 5A, that rivalry stopped.

Now we've almost come full circle. The biggest rival is Lincoln County (a throw back to the old bucket game between Stanford and Lancaster), but it doesn't seem to be very fierce. Perhaps because the two schools aren't in the same class or maybe because the communities are so close that both sides know each other so well.

I do know that I miss "rivalry" week at Garrard, no matter who it was. I think healthy rivalries are good for both schools and can bring out the best in both programs.

I think something else that takes away form GC and LC being a good rivalry is that most LC fans think of Boyle County as being their biggest rival, and they don't even play them in football anymore. I agree with you, Garrard and Lincoln seem to get along to well to be rivals. The difference in the size of the schools also play into it I think.

Rivalry games IMO are great for the communities. Your always going to have your wacko's out their in anything you do. It get's so poltical anymore. You have people thinking and saying: We need to calm down. People are getting to crazy about this or that. We should give everyone a trophy. We don't want to leave any one out. We may hurt someones feelings. "PLEASE" It's a sport. It's healthy to compete in all aspects of the game. From players to fans.

So some people think we shouldn't have games like this because someone or some people might get out of hand. Thats about 1% of the people. So the 99% suffer because of the 1%. Thats kind of like 95% of the people would like prayer in class and other places. But 5% say no. So the 95% suffer for it. Or some may want to hang a USA flag in the yard that they bought and payed for but they can"t because 1% of the population says no. I seen on the news about two weeks ago I think it was North Carolina. The little league soccer, football and baseball teams had TEAM SHERIFFs. If you were caught cheering for your child or someone elses child you were asked to be quiet. If you did it again you had to leave the game. You could only cheer for the team. WHAT THE HECK IS THE USA coming to. You can't cheer for a child!!!!!! We have people thinking rivalry games are being to mean to each. Maybe we should all wear big peace signs and hug each and every time we see each other.

I just think that even bringing up this subject is crazy. IT PAYS TO BE IN THE MINORITY

Man I feel better

Exactly, learn to compete, learn to win, and learn to lose. That is what high school sports are about, learning life skills.
