Highlands and Ryle Play Twice

Featured Replies

I saw this in another thread and didn't want to hijack.

This seems realy unusual, and I apologize if I'm rehashing old news. Does anyone else in the Commonwealth have the same opponent twice on the regular-season schedule? I know they're in separate classes, so there won't be a third matchup. What were the factors that resulted in this quirk in the schedule?

From what I hear Highlands was having trouble getting other teams to play them. IMO there are a lot of teams (and fans) who like to say "we are the best". But for some reason they don't give Highlands a call.

Yet Trinity can play three teams from Ohio? Everyone from both sides says Highlands and Trinity are always trying to get a game with each other, but I don't ever see it actually happening.

This way if they both win state they can both say "we are the greatest".Way too many years have gone by for these two teams not to play each other.

Then again, when these two do eventually play each other the pre-game hype will really be something, since THS and HHS play each other so infrequently (the last game was back in 2000, and the two programs have only played twice, with each program winning one game).

Actually, I think it's neat that they don't play so often, since it allows so much end-of-the-year debate about who's number one... things get boring when it's so clear-cut!!!!!!!

I've never known this to happen playing the same team twice in the regular season.

Bellevue and Dayton played each other twice every year for a long time, and quite frequently a third time in the playoffs.

Does the fact that no one wants to play Highlands....

- Say more about the teams that won't step up and play them?

or

- More about Highlands/Dale Mueller and some of their past tactics/antics?

I have actually spoke with Dale Mueller (HC at Highlands) and Bryson Warner (HC at Ryle) in the past about this series. They both say that their teams have trouble scheduling quality opponents. That is the main reason.

It also didn't help when Holmes went to 4A this year - creating an extra hole in Highlands schedule.

According to Warner, another reason he did it was to improve his team. He will tell you, "to be the best, you have to play the best."

So to summarize, Highlands needed to fill a spot and was having trouble doing so and Ryle wants to use the Bluebirds as a measuring stick for success.

Since there are no tactics/antics for them to complain about, it would have to be the former.

They have played something like 130 games in the history of the program, but actually have only played twice in the playoffs. Dayton won 31-6 in 1998 and Bellevue won 20-13 in 2007.

I'm not expecting Trinity and Highlands to play twice a season, or even every season, but they always talk about being the best two programs and struggling to schedule games, it doesn't seem like much of a leap to schedule each other. Make them your first call and built the rest of your schedule around that game.

Riiigghtt  However, it isn't 1998 anymore. Nowadays, I would say that it is a mix of Highlands looking to get larger profile games and NKY teams not thrilled to play them.

Or someone dosn't have to face the fact that the other team is the best.

Conner and Boone used to play each other twice in the regular season.

Actually Highlands wanted to schedule Trinity for the last game of the season which is now the second Ryle game. Trinity did not want to play the last game of the regular season and neither team had an open date earlier.

They are trying to play each other.
