Actually Highlands wanted to schedule Trinity for the last game of the season which is now the second Ryle game. Trinity did not want to play the last game of the regular season and neither team had an open date earlier.

 

They are trying to play each other.

Well, if Highlands goes undefeated and wins 5A and Trinity goes undefeated the rest of the year, beating Saint X in the playoffs and winning 6A in the process, then I'd have to say that both Trinity and Highlands have legitimate claims to being considered best in the state.

If this scenario played out, then that's a lot of debate... why spoil it by actually having these two teams settle the matter on the field!?!?!

However, wouldn't be nice if we could pair up the state champs with one another the following week...for example 1A champ will play 2A champ, 3A champ will play 4A champ and 5A champ would play 6A champ.

You paying for the travel costs? Beechwood to Fort Campbell is about 5 hour drive, 6 hours on a bus.

It would be interesting to see how these games go, but if what you described were put into effect it would take away some of the luster of being a "state champ," since half of the state champs would then go on to lose the last game played that year. If a team wins the Class 1A state title and then gets hammered the next week by the Class 2A champ, I can see where it would leave a sour taste in the mouths of the players and fans of that 1A team. In my opinion, it's not right for state champs to be ending their year with a loss... there's just something wrong about that.

 

I think a more feasible option would be to have some of these defending state champs play each other during the first week of the next season... I realize that it's a different season and all, but it would create some interesting/good matchups in week one and would not take anything away from what the teams accomplished in the previous year.
