9th Region Preseason Coaches Poll

Featured Replies

That's the way it should be. I never understood the runner-up advancing anyway.

This brings up a good point. Does anyone know if a District Runner Up has ever won the region? Or, at least made it to the finals of the region? :idunno:

Haven't there been some Holmes/Covcath region finals? One would have to have been district runner up....

I agree. But, how would you seed a district like the 36th, where the teams don't play each other in the regular season?

If they went to seeding, they would have to play each other. Should be a somewhat easy fix. Every other district does it.

I believe that Highlands was district runner-up in '01, but I could be wrong.

I know just recently Holmes and CovCath met in the regional final. I believe it was the 07-08 team, Arrez's senior year when they played the regional final at Conner.

I think Holmes was the district runner-up in 2006-07 and went on to win the region.

As quite a few people have stated, there has been at least one CCH / Holmes matchup recently.

Since district champs must be in the other side of the bracket as their district counterpart, that means the answer to your question is "yes."

Thanks for all the quick responses. With this being the case, then the argument of only taking the District Champ and not the runner up goes out the window (in my opinion, only). By taking both, it gives a team a 'second chance' to make it to Rupp.

I'm all about second chances.... A team could have had an off night, injuries, foul trouble, etc.. I know the argument is still out there about one and done and all that. I'm just saying that in my opinion, since district runner ups have moved on to the region final and possibly to Rupp in the past then I think it is good to give the district runner up a get out of jail free card and advance to the regional tournament.

I'm with you. I also think it allows the best 2 teams, who may be in the same district, the opportunity to play for a regional championship.

Since dist championship games are not all on the same night in a region. Has there ever been any "gamesmanship" from a team that knows an outcome of say a dist championship played the night before? Or has any team ever rested their stars knowing that they're going to the regional regardless of the outcome of their dist championship game? Just wondering.

I wouldn't think so. Obviously, the district championship is not nearly important; however, district losers (runner-ups) must square off against a district champion in the 1st round of region.

I don't think the "gamesmanship" aspect would be a good idea. Also, I don't think any team who is serious about making a tournament run (whether it's a regional tournament or the state tournament) would "throw" a game that late in the season.

If I am not mistaken the draw for the regional is not done until after the districts. I don't think you would want to be runner up in a district and have to play a district champion especially when you don't know what district champ you will draw.

I think Holmes was the district runner-up in 2006-07 and went on to win the region.

Correct. CCH won the district that year at CCH. Holmes won the region over CCH at Holmes in OT.

Lets play this game then. Hypothetically, Holmes the consensus # team in region 9 loses a barn burner in a very hostile environment at Cov Cath. Holmes had one of those bad nights that someone mentioned earlier in this thread. So ok we now know Holmes is the runnerup even though they are still considered the prohibitive favorite to win the region. Next night Highlands and NCC meet in the 36th finals. NCC has beaten CovCath handily just a week earlier, but got destroyed by Holmes 2 weeks ago. If you win, there is a very good possibility you draw Holmes in the 1st round. Do we think it has ever been in the back of a coaches mind to lose the dist champ game to stay away from another dist runnerup? Just puttin it out there.:sssh:

What happens when you lose & you have to play Dixie (the district champ) and are still in the same bracket as Holmes?
