9th Region Preseason Coaches Poll

Featured Replies

Lets play this game then. Hypothetically, Holmes the consensus # team in region 9 loses a barn burner in a very hostile environment at Cov Cath. Holmes had one of those bad nights that someone mentioned earlier in this thread. So ok we now know Holmes is the runnerup even though they are still considered the prohibitive favorite to win the region. Next night Highlands and NCC meet in the 36th finals. NCC has beaten CovCath handily just a week earlier, but got destroyed by Holmes 2 weeks ago. If you win, there is a very good possibility you draw Holmes in the 1st round. Do we think it has ever been in the back of a coaches mind to lose the dist champ game to stay away from another dist runnerup? Just puttin it out there.:sssh:

That's why they don't draw until after the district tournaments are completely over.

What happens when you lose & you have to play Dixie (the district champ) and are still in the same bracket as Holmes?

Well at least you know for sure you don't have Holmes in the 1st round. There is the possibilty that Holmes is on the other side of the bracket, and you know Holmes is also playing a dist champ in the 1st round. Maybe they go down. All I'm saying is that this goofy set up could lead to some chicanery. And usually if an a situation is possible it has occurred at some point in time. Just putting it out there:cool:

Doesn't matter. If you know Holmes loses and then you lose, you cannot play them in the 1st round of the regional.

Just from my experience in playing locally in district championship games and then on to the region. It never crossed my mind to seek an easier first round game in the region depending on how the other district championship games ended.

All I thought about, and I feel my teammates thought about was getting that trophy that said DISTRICT CHAMPIONS instead of RUNNER UP. Now, we did think about what side of the draw the other teams 'top teams' would wind on and hoped we didn't meet them until the finals.

Now, 20+ years later, when I return to High School, I show my kids the trophies that our team earned that I was a part of.

Just my thoughts on the whole thing.....

At that point in the season, if you're afraid to play anybody, you're not going to win the region & it won't matter anyway.

I won't disagree with you. But are you saying that from the very beginning of the system we are in now, and we are talking many years that no one has either rested players, or tanked a game knowingly to avoid another team in the regional? In all of the districts and regions in Ky. for all of these years, do you not think this may have occurred?

Here's another scenario. Your star player tweaks an ankle in semis of the district. Your team wins in the semis and you move on to the finals. Star player can go if needed, but is not 100%. Since you know you don't have to win the championship game, do you keep star player on the bench, jeopardizing your chance to win the game to have him healthier for the regional tournament, that you know you are going to. I guess my point with this is that I think the fact that a loser moves on in the road to our Sweet 16 championship is archaic and just plain stupid.

I don't have a problem with resting players, particularly if they're banged up. But to suggest that a team is going to lose a game so that they can avoid the CHANCE that they'll play 1 team in the 1st round is a little ridiculous, IMO.

Has it happened? I honestly don't think so.

Has a coach rested a player who has had a bad ankle or something, knowing that the next game (the 1st round of region) is more important than the district championship? Yes.

It may be ridiculous. But to say ridiculous things don't occur is a little naive. My contention is that if it is a possibility, then there is a chance something like this has occurred. All I'm saying is that there ia an open window due to the structure of Kys playoff system.

I'm with ColonelCrazy on this one, sorry M!!

So, in your theory, 'Holmes' (or the best team around) losses/gets upset so they go to the '2' side of the region tourney. Your team, having a chance to win a district CHAMPIONSHIP and be a '1', decides to tank the Championship game in order to be '2' so you don't play 'Holmes' in the first round.

Let's look at the percentages....

If 'Holmes' is a '2' and your team is a '1' you have a 33% chance of playing them in the first round.

If you are also a '2' you have a 0% chance of playing them in the first round but have a 100% chance of playing a '1' in the first round (tougher matchup even if you consider yourself a '1' and threw the Championship game).

So, to increase your odds by only 33% you are willing to live with not winning a Championship in High School?

I must be as naive as CC!!! There is no way on God's green earth a coach is going to do this. Is there a chance? Sure, but their is also a chance your bus wrecks on the way to the arena because a driver of another car ran a red light and your team is injured and can't play the game anyway. However, if your team was a '1' instead of a '2' your game time would have been different and you wouldn't have put your team in the position to be going through that intersection at that time.

CC this is an argument/discussion you are not going to be able to win so I would give it up. You can drum up all kinds of scenerios to make these different arguments/discussions.

Just my 2 cents worth.

These scenarios assume that Holmes loses in the district championship:

If you lose, you would play a district champion. There's a 33% chance that you'll be in the same bracket as Holmes. There's a 67% chance you won't.

If you win, there's a 50% chance you'll be in the same bracket as Holmes. There's a 33% chance that you won't.

Theoretically, the odds are better if you lose; however, I do not like that approach & find it very difficult to believe that any coach would embrace it. If you think you've got a legitimate shot at winning the region (which I'd assume every one in the region does), then you want the #1 seed.

You'll have to beat them in the regional finals regardless.

Hey my point is that it could happen. The argument that you will not win with me is that losing a game in a tournament that leads to the state championship and still moving on is a joke. You may like it, I do not.

Second Chances..... That is my point.

Not really much different than a college team losing their end of season conference tournament and winning the national championship.

Sure it is.
