It looks like this rule is pretty plain. An eighth grader may play JV football, but not varsity. Maybe you've found more, but based solely on this rule, I think the class of the opponents is not a factor, only the level of play (varsity).

I would doubt Beechwood bowed out of the game purely based on being afraid to get embarassed or get beat badly. I'm sure there is a legit reason, and if their only option at QB was an 8th grader, knowing that CCH for sure plays juniors that would make it hard to play the game.

I don't see Beechwood being a team that backs out of a game just because they had a rough day on the varsity level. They're better competitors than that.

 

And regardless, were I even to think that was a possibility, that's the kind of thing I'd keep to myself. Win with class.

BW typically dresses 20-22 players for JV games. If 8 players were standing on the sidelines injured, including both JV QB's, why would they play...also, several soph's played extensive minutes on Saturday. Only a fool coach would play this meaningless game and risk additional injuries with district play beginning.

You can't be serious. BW steps up every year and plays against bigger schools. They knew when they picked up HHS this year that they had a very small senior class. That did not scare them away.

 

There is no shame in losing to a school who dresses twice as many players. There may be some shame in losing if you are the bigger school. BW could of went and found smaller teams that they could beat easily I am sure. What do you get from beating teams by 6 TD'S.

 

With numbers smaller and injuries to some key players could be the reason. This will be my guess. Like it was said earlier, why worry with this JV game when district games are coming up. JMO

As others have posted, Beechwood has no fear of playing anyone. Their JV team is scheduled to play 5A Dixie 3 times (just as tough as CCH JV) and 5A Highlands JV 2 times. That doesn't look like a program that tries to avoid tough games.

Everyone please keep BGP Rule #2 in mind.

At the JV level it's not about wins and losses. It's about getting your younger kids some playing time and experience so they'll be ready next year to step up and play. Also if BW is worried about getting embarrassed, they wouldn't schedule Dixie and Highlands multiple times. They schedule those teams multiple times to get their JV players more games. Wish Cov Cath would do that, their JV schedule is down to 5 games.

I do not think it has anything to do with playing against juniors. I believe it has to do with if one player from either team takes a snap prior to that game (JV game) during a varsity game, those players are considered varsity players. 8th graders cannot compete against varsity players in football.

I hear about two weeks ago that this game more that likely would be cancelled, reason given was low numbers .

CovCath has had at least two JV cancelled, NewCath has already cancelled.
