Ten days is the common number thrown around for swine flu, at least for college students and that age. Does that mean, if we're dealing with potential multiple cases, that Brossart might be cancelling next week's game by the end of this week? And at what time can we see the state/KHSAA getting involved in cancelling sporting events themselves?

My opinion, coming from what I've heard and what I've seen occur at UK, is that alot of students in high school and college will get swine flu. Luckily it seems that this group also seems to bounce back fairly well. The unfortunate reality, and the reason why great concern is being placed on this issue, is that if enough cases occur we will have a death or multiple deaths of students, that is if there already hasn't been. If this is the start of something big, then an institution such as the state government or KHSAA must have a firm hand in quashing the spread of this disease through these events. We are fortunate that cases usually settle out in 2 weeks. I'm also assuming that the farther the travel, the more likely a game will be cancelled because of the fear of spreading H1N1 to a new area.

I'd say spreading it to Hardin Co. has a lot to do with it. Brossart's been introduced to it. Thats a given. First step is to contain it from other areas.

They also didn't want all those players sitting in the close confines of a bus for such a long trip. That's just asking for the illness to spread.

I can appreciate your comment. I sometimes feel exactly the same way and often feel that there is an over-reaction to situations when it is unwarrented.

 

With that being said, we are sailing in uncharted waters here in Alexandria, and a case of Swine Flu is a big deal in our school environment. Add the fact that we have a first year principal who can't afford to make a careless decision in this case that might come back to haunt him at this stage of his career, and I can see why this decision was made.

 

Unless my information is inaccurate, the University of Cincinnati and Xavier University have had nearly a hundred cases of this same virus, which is being treated as a different strain of the flu, and the students are recovering with few after-effects.

 

Give us the benefit of the doubt here and assume that the game was cancelled in good faith for all of the right reasons.

My understanding is that both principals talked about it and both agreed to cancel the game.

"FLU" of any type is potentially fatal. The bad news is that the estimates are that potentially as much as 80% of the US population could get the swine flu (obviously, a worst-case scenario!), so sheer numbers of infected mean the death toll will climb.

 

The good news is that this doesn't appear to be a particularly deadly flu strain. In fact, it appears to be a VERY mild flu, albeit a very contagious one.

This morning it was reported that the game will be made up at a point later this season.

 

Both teams have had their bye week so do you play back to back games like Conner did last year, or do you just say lets do this next year and extend the contract??

I am not sure what will happen but I think if the teams where closer you would see a back to back game but with E-town being a few hours away I am not sure they will do it. But I may be wrong I know the players and coaches love playing football so who knows what they will decide to do.

Neither will the families of the 30,000 people who die of influenza this year.

 

I'm not being disrespectful, but 30,000 dieing of influenza, and less then 1,000 dieing of Swine flue is not debatable to me. This is just another thing to scare people. Simply put, get the flu vaccine and you will be a lot safer.

 

I have had several people that I know who got both, and they all said influenza was a lot worse then swine.

I understand and agree somewhat with what Ram is saying. It seems very similar to the Y2K deal at the turn of the century. Lots of unknowns????? Most of the deaths that are occuring from the Swine flu, the victims have some other underlying health problems.

 

But as a coach and administrator the people at Brossart made the right decsion. The student-athlete's well being has to come fist. Hope everyone recovers and the impact on the season and more importantly lives of our citizens of the bluegrass state is limited.
