President Barack Obama's spokesman publicly disagreed with former President Jimmy Carter on Wednesday over Carter's contention that some conservative opposition to Obama is based on race.

"The president does not think it is based on the color of his skin," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters.

 

I hope this clears things up for those of you that tend to lean Carter's way.

I hear it all the time. "No one is more discriminated against than the white males." I have students say it. I've also heard adults say it.

Well, I've now learned that I disagree with Obama because I'm a racist. I'd never considered myself a racist before. Spent years in the Marines with a lot of African Americans and got along fabulously with them. Practice law with African Americans. On several boards with African Americans. Have friends that are African Americans. None have ever hinted to me that they thought I was a racist. Now I learn from former President Carter that because I have animosity against Obama I'm a racist.

 

I guess since I disapproved of Carter as a President, I must be bigoted against Southerners who are former Navy officers who lusted in their hearts for women other than their wives and had brothers named Billy. And the whole time I thought it was because I disagreed with Carter's actions as President. Silly me.

 

I should have known that Carter knew me better than I and my African American co-workers, acquaintances and friends did. Heck, most Democrats think they know more about me and what is better for me than I do anyway so I really shouldn't be surprised .

 

Obama better have Kanye not only follow Biden around grabbing microphones, but he needs to follow former President Carter also.

 

I don’t think it’s constructive or healthy to dismiss racism as something from antiquity. A biracial president was just elected, and that likely wouldn’t have happened in the not too distant past, but I don’t believe it is an indication that racism is over. I think it’s healthy to discuss it. And that doesn’t mean pandering to Jesse Jackson or some other demagogue. Shouting “liar” at the president doesn’t make you a racist, though it makes you sophomoric, dumb, or both. However, because some have latched on to this and other things as evidence of racism doesn’t mean that the entire discourse should be abandoned.

And I do not believe anyone thinks racism is over. The big issue here is the scare tactic many on the far left are using to throw back in the face of anyone that disagrees with the President. I find it sickening and it does nothing but thwart any past efforts and expand racial divides. Just as the committed far right would call people "unpatriotic" for being against the Iraq war.

Why wouldn't I? It was a stupid comment by Carter and totally unfounded.

+ See earlier links and post about the way he handled the illegitimate child of Thrummond and you could detect a perspective that wonders if this child were white if he would have been as vocal.

 

+ Wilson was a big pusher for keeping the Confederate Flag flying on the Capitol building of South Carolina. While I'm not one who wants the history of that nation to fade away, there were a lot of issues about that controversy that had severe racist overtones.

 

* Mainly that the flag being flown was the "Battle Flag." If they wanted to perserve heritage, fly the official flag of the CSA.

 

* The "Battle Flag" holds serious reprecussions concerning the Klan and Segregation, particularly since the flag was only ordered to be flown starting in 1962. Timing is everything and context can bring clarity.

 

That's where I would disagree with you RTS. While stating it appears his motives of racism are unfounded claims, they are not necessarily Totally unfounded. Depending upon perspective they might hold more weight than we are comfortable with.

What else would the spokesperson be expected to say? It would be political suicide for the President's people to begin this kind of campaign.

On a side note, I understand that since Wilson's comment, the policy to prevent Illegal Immigrants has been added and pushed by the White House. The exact thing that Wilson wanted and the White House had been resisting.

I don't mean to read anything into the above LBBC but is the resistance of the White House on this issue any different than the last administration?

 

It appeared to me for the last 8 years before Obama that Bush wanted nothing to do with the issue because Texas was a key state for him and he appeared very "soft" on this issue all 8 years. Why should Obama be criticized now for something the GOP had the ability to get "tough" on but chose not to?

Do some people have genuine concerns about the federal government becoming further involved in health care? Yes.

 

Is it politically convenient to dismiss opposition by condemning the entire lot as racist? Yes.

 

Did people do the same thing over the last eight years, only instead of "racist" read "un-American." Yes.

 

Is it always easier to dismiss instead of listen? Yes.

I've never said that politics aren't behind Carter's words.

 

Whether they are behind his words or not, I've stated that you have to give Wilson the nod that he's not a racist based on that outburst. However he does have a distinctive past that could lend itself to being interpreted leaning in that direction. (At least much more so than many others)

And I didn't say that you didn't say that. I was asking the question.

 

If Senator Byrd disagrees with Obama on any issue, does his "distinctive past" lend itself to being interpreted that he disagrees with Obama for racial reasons? Do you think Carter would make the same allegation?

 

And by the way, Carter didn't accuse just Wilson of having animous towards Obama (Wilson's name isn't even mentioned in Carter's quotes); it was directed against many more people than just Wilson. As far as I'm concerned it was directed at me and I take great umbrage at the allegation.

 

Yes there is racism still alive and well in this country and throughout the world. There is racism by all ethnic people against other ethnics. It's in no way limited to "whites" against "blacks" either. But every time charges of racism are thrown about without justification, merit or proof, it greatly undermines the credible allegations of racism.
