:thumb: This also breeds this idea of the "oppression of white people" I often hear. First, you must deny racism exists in this country, or marginalize it to insignificance. Then, as a result, claim any use of the term "racism" is merely a quest for the subordination of white people.

Cries of racism these days are the modern version of the "Boy who cried wolf" fable. I've gotten to the point that when I hear racism claims I just yawn and say "yeah, whatever".

Start the first sentence with "many" and I would wholeheartedly agree.

Exactly. President Bush did have events occur that were not of his making, such as Katrina and 9/11, but he didn't inherit two wars and an economic disaster.

Well, I can tell you it happened this weekend to my neighbor who is white. A young girl was spending time with her daughter. My neighbor and my wife were having a yard sale together in our driveway. The neighbor, her daughter and the friend spend most of their time at our house.

 

Well the young girl's grandmother game to pick her up. She saw the girl over at our house. The little girl was supposed to come back. She later called and said that she couldn't because her grandmother said that my neighbor lived in the ghetto!

 

I can tell you that our subdivision is about 8 years old and all of the houses are of that age or younger. So racism is alive and well.

 

The only reason we knew about it is that our neighbor came over and told us.

Not like Obama didn't know about them, so I don't see the argument people are trying to make here. Just because Obama "knew about them" doesn't mean that they aren't serious and difficult issues to deal with ... Bush didn't have nearly the same stuff on his plate on 1/20/00.

You doth protest to much, RTS. I can understand where you don't feel that Wilson's eruption was based in racism. On the surface, "Lies" doesn't shout out "racism". But given his history, is it any leap to think that his personal feelings about Obama the man fueled his outburst?

 

I can see where Carter is coming from. But I live and work in a very diverse little world. I see discrimination of all sorts all the time, and it's heartbreaking and infuriating at the same time.

 

There most certainly is racism, just as there is sexism, sexuality-ism (my new made up word), and a host of other -ism's.

 

I think that racism is still alive and kicking, but people now don't want to admit to it, because at least in this day and age there is a certain shamefulness in admitting you are a racist, prejudiced in anyway, really.

 

Frankly, I am guilty of studipidism (my second made up word), and am prone to look down on stupid people.

I think some clarification is in order regarding Carter's comments. Carter addressed the Wilson outburst, but was also speaking of a general societal climate and a host of other anti-Obama invective.

 

Carter spoke directly to the Wilson matter and the 9/12 anti-government protests during a forum at the Carter Center in Atlanta, also on Tuesday.

"I think it's based on racism," Carter said of the tone of the opposition, in response to an audience question. "There is an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president."

Signs carried by protesters at the 9/12 anti-government march on Washington such as "we should bury Obama[care] with Kennedy, for instance, and Obama is a Nazi and Obama's pictures with Hitler's mustache on it -- those kind of things are not just casual outcomes of a sincere debate over whether we should have a national program in health care or not," the former president said. "It's deeper than that."

Yes, high school kids. I would bet they've heard their share of that stuff from older siblings, parents, etc.

 

No, I don't protest to much, it's absurd to view the majority of those who have a disagreement with Obama as racism. It's absurd to pretend anyone knows that Wilson was being racist in his outburst. It's also an absolute insult to Obama. What, is he not capable of handling his opposition without people running to his aide screaming "racist" every time someone acts partisan against him?

Again, absurdity. Remember all the signs carried at rallies and protests and how they portrayed Bush? Was that also racist?

If Obama can accept the praise and accolades of being the the first black President then he should accept the criticism that comes with it also... Even Obama himself said the "liar" comment was not racially motivated... Just another side show for the left....

I've seen no evidence from the President that he can't handle criticism of his policy.

 

I don't believe most Americans are racists. I do believe many, out of ignorance , fear blacks. I do think that images like cartoons showing dead monkeys, guys carrying monkeys with "Obama" on its head, Rush calling him "Half-rican" and singing a song called "the magic Negro", a lady saying "muslims are taking over the country", cartoons with watermelons, etc give those that wonder ample reason to do so.
