Players on the CCH defense told me personally after the game that he was in. The umpire told the o-line of Beechwood, "...ease up, he's in..." That's why the oline started running off the field.

Nice. I have heard all kinds of stories, so I don't know, maybe he wasn't, maybe he was. Either way, even if it tied up, I think CCH pulls it out. There was something special about that night and it was pulling for CCH. It was just a good game for everyone to be a part of.

The 88 game was a great game for both schools. Cov Cath went on to go 14-1 and win the AAA State Championship. Beechwood got beat in the Semis by a very good Pikeville team.

This has to be one of the top 2 or 3 non district rivalry games in the state. With the longevity of the rivalry, the quality of the two programs and competitiveness of the games, this one is tough to top.

I don't know that I could go so far as to say that. Granted, Beechwood does lead the series, but I don't think you can rightly say that a team "has somebody's number" when the games are historically as close as they have been. Now you might have been able to say that Mike Yeagle had Lynn Ray's number (I'd personally even contest that), but I don't think you can defend that statement on the whole.

 

Both schools now have different head coaches than they have had for the majority of the series. Beechwood went to former assistant coach Noel Rash, and Cov Cath is now using former assistant coach Dave Wirth (after 2 other coaching changes), which you could argue wouldn't institute much change, but I'll tell you, Cov Cath's game plan is 180 degrees different from what they had under Coach Ray.

 

Coach Ray's 30 year game plan was a very traditional smashmouth offense, that bordered on pro-set depending on the strength of their quarterbacks. Their defense was based in the 4-4. Since Ray retired as head coach, we've seen the spread come into play and a west coast offense take form...I don't think our quarterbacks take more than 6 or 7 snaps under center each game. And the defenses are changed all over the place: 4-3, 3-4, 5-2-4, and zone. I don't see how, with 3 completely different coaching staffs in 5 years, that any opponent could possibly have a team's "number".

I guess that depends on what your idea of having somebody's number is. If you're basing it solely on wins against losses, then yes, you're absolutely right. When I think of "having somebody's number" though, I think it implies being able to anticipate all of their moves. As close as things were as often as they were, with as many lead changes as there were in games, and as many games decided in the fourth quarter as there were, I wouldn't quite say he had Ray's number.

 

Don't get me wrong, Yeagle had great teams and did the right thing with them more often than not, but there were too many close calls and big game-changing plays to say Yeagle had Ray's number, in my humble opinion.

All I'm saying is that in recent history. Beechwood finds a way to win against CC. Don't mistake that I don't like CC. I always root for the catholic schools. CC has a great tradition and has always put a quality team on the feild.

 

You can throw all the records out on this game. We are talking about a grudge match. It's like Bengals vs Steelers, Well maybe not a good example, but I think you get the point. Rock on Cov Cath. Good luck!

I will go with Cov Cath with this one. Beechwood is only a running team. If Cov Cath stops Beechwood running back they will be good to go. Beechwood doesnt have a passing game.
