What a dingbat I am sometimes. It just occurred to me that MANY students across the nation return to school on the day after Labor Day. Heck, I was one of them.

 

I noticed that in the speech, too. Are the any schools in Kentucky that open up tomorrow? The only time I can remember opening after Labor Day in the last 20+ years in when there have been summer construction projects in the district that were unfinished. I believe it happened in Garrard County in 1990, 1993, and maybe 2000.

I know when I was in grade school in Missouri we didn't start school until after Labor Day.

This is all most of us were asking for . . . a script of what he planned to say. It is a positive speech with a good message. I am probably going to try to work it in to my schedule.

Too bad. I understand that several school systems jumped the gun on this.

I am still confused on whatever one thought he would say?

I think it could get dicey when the President can speak to all the kids unfiltered like others have said however this seems to be a nice job by the President.

I HAVE A MAJOR problem with all the politicians that preach education to get elected then cut funds, schools, jobs etc. Elect me because I value our kids education. Thank you for electing me....sorry we don't have the funds to keep your schools open, hire teachers, keep teachers, technology etc.

Honestly it's not rocket science! We need more schools with more teachers having more resources and smaller class sizes. That helps the unemployment rate and makes class sizes smaller where it is much easier to teach kids. Instead we continue the trend of cutting teachers jobs, making classes bigger, cutting out classes and expect a better product!

Sometimes I look at government and know I might be somewhat nieve but I also think I have too much common sense at times as opposed to what seems to be a majority of folks running our country!

The outrage wasn't about what President Obama would say, it was about A) transparency B) parental rights' and C) precedent. Now that he has released what he is going to say, it takes care of the first two of those issues, and hopefully any address in the future from the President will also come with a transcript. If people had not reacted the way that they did, would transcript have been released? Who knows. But I understand the outrage from people, and President Obama has made the right move here to quench the fires.

To be fair, I consider most of history and civics education to be a form of indoctrination.

 

Bear in mind too folks that I am not just some random crazy in the wilderness saying that, I have considerable background in history, education and the application thereof.

And the left was outraged with the "arrogance"of these speeches..

 

"The Department of Education should not be producing paid political advertising for the president, it should be helping us to produce smarter students," said Rep. Richard Gephardt, then the Democratic majority leader in the House of Representatives."And the president should be doing more about education than saying, 'Lights, camera, action.'"

 

Patricia Schroeder, then a Democratic member of Congress from Colorado, said the speech showed "the arrogance of power," and that the White House should not be "using precious dollars for campaigns" when "we are struggling for every silly dime we can get" for education.

Interesting how the two sides are mirrors of each other, isn't it? Neither side ever learns from the mistakes of the other.
