OK, here we go...allow me to throw out the first pitch in review of the BGP football rankings...(which are very good, by the way...)

 

But - some observations...

 

3A - Is Henry County fielding an "A" and a "B" team this year? They check in at #19 and #26...

 

5A - This looks very interesting. After the obvious #1 choice, things get very interesting, indeed. Picking #2-#15 must have been pretty difficult.

 

6A - Manual seems a bit high for this early. Lost a ton. But I'm assuming that this poll is meant to reflect what the pollsters think things will look like at the end of the year...and Manual certainly has the potential to be a top-tier team. Lafayette at #12 and Shelby County at #17 seems a bit topsy-turvey - especially after the 28-0 spanking (OK, it was a scrimmage) Shelby just put on the Generals...

I wouldn't be suprised to see PRP rise while Seneca and Fern Creek drop.

I haven't seen PRP, so I have no first-hand knowledge of the team at all, however, I have talked with people who have seen the Panthers and the consensus seemed to be that it could be a tough year for the Ridge.

I've spoken with about 3 people who have seen them first hand and have felt they are going to be extremely tough, very fast and big. Guess, we'll have to wait and see.

From discussions on this board in past years, it was explained that the BGP Rankings were not necessarily to reflect "what the pollsters think things will look like at the end of the year", but rather what the predicted outcome would be if a higher ranked team would play a lower ranked team in a regular season game that week on a neutral field. There are a lot of things which occur throughout the season (injuries, suspensions, team chemistry improving or falling apart, younger teams improving with more game experience, etc.) which will definitely impact rankings on a week-to-week basis. From what I've seen in the past five years or so, the Guru's people seem to do a decent job in making appropriate adjustments as the season progresses.

 

In regards to Lafayette being ranked slightly higher than Shelby County despite the scrimmage results, the BGP listing seems to be showing less disparity between these two teams than other preseason prognostications that I've seen. They may have also been looking at the fact that historically Lafayette never performs that well in preseason scrimmages, and also the fact that star RB/WR/DB Eric Shaw and a couple of other major contributing starters did not play in the Shelby County scrimmage.

 

Nonetheless, it will be very interesting to see how the Rockets perform this season, now that they have all the players back from injury. With a QB like Cresap tossing the ball, Shelby County's offense should resemble Seneca's in a lot of ways. The key thing to look for is improvement in defense. The Rockets too often in the past found themselves on the short end of a shootout score because they could not stop the opposition. If the defensive effort they exerted in the Lafayette scrimmage is not a mirage, then Shelby County could surprise a lot of people and contend with Male and Fern Creek for the district title.

Why?

 

I have been hearing that Johnson Central is supposed to be very good this year... I must admit that I am also surprised that JC is not 2nd or 3rd in 5A.

Fern Creek supposedly lost a scrimmage to Valley which if so, should shake things up in 6A. That is very surprising. Granted only a glorified practice but interesting still.

I was a little surprised to see Danville and Green Co. above Monroe, all three lost quite a bit but it seems Monroe was the only one that dropped while Green and Danville rose...

Your 2A picks surprised me! A lot of folks up in NKy are thinking that Covington Holy Cross is the team to beat in NKy 2A, but you have Newport Central Catholic ranked 3rd in the entire 2A while Covington Holy Cross is ranked 19th!

 

Now I understand that NCC has history on it's side, but I have always felt that the BGP's poll didn't fall into the same trap as the AP and Coaches poll do, as they seem to always pick the best teams based on last year or years quality of team!

 

 

Why did you all rank NCC so high?

I hate to say this...............I think that Corbin, Whitley Co. and Knox Central are all ranked a little to high in their respective classes.

I was a little surprised that Mason County is rated so high. I was not that impressed with the Royals last year and they lost their best player in their running back. I can't see them being ahead of Belfry by any means. I would have had them in the 8-10 range.
