Anderson Silva to Heavyweight?

Featured Replies

He would beat Gonzaga, Herring and maybe Velasquez, especially if any of them tried to stand with him.

If you think those guys are not going to shoot and take him down, then your crazy. Silva has poor takedown defense against wrestlers and his BJJ is said to be great but he has yet to prove that...........he is very unwilling to get on the ground.

Herring has only got beat by very few guys who are not top HW, GG only ? is heart, and Velasquez is a beast.......all them GnP Silva unless he catches them on a flash KO.

I have fought, wrestled, sparred whatever, with a lot of people and no matter how mean or skilled you are size/strength is the one thing that is almost impossible to overcome with all else being equal.

Thats your opinion. Why not put him in there and lets see if its hype or not? If it is we will find out if he fights them.

I agree, put him in with HH and lets see what happens........

I'm not really sure what you are talking about regarding the General Discussion forum.

But the way I see it, size doesn't matter if the smaller person knows how to fight, and the bigger person does not. Obviously if all things are equal then size makes a difference.

Silva walks around at about 205 when he's fighting at 185. That means when he enters the cage on fight night he's probably around 200-205 lbs (when he's a middleweight and weighed in at 185). But when he fights at light heavyweight I'd say he puts on some weight and probably walks around at about 215-220. Therefore he could fight at heavyweight and not have to cut any weight if my guesses are anywhere close.

I have a strange memory (Post 42)- but I was just messing around.

Can you explain to me how the weighing in works? He can be in the cage at 205 lbs in a weight division that maxs out at 185 lbs? As you can tell, I'm not a boxing fan either.

I actually remembered what you were talking about, just wanted to see if you'd actually look it up when I said I couldn't remember it.

Fighters weigh in the day before a fight. Before the weigh in they usually "cut weight" by basically dehydrating themselves and sweating most of the weight out. By the time they weigh in, most have cut 10 lbs at least. After they weigh in, they rehydrate and slowly put the weight back on. They might not be back at full weight, but they're usually heavier on fight night than they are on the night of the weigh ins.

I agree that strength is hard to over come with all else being equal, but I don't think all else is equal with Herring/Silva. I think Silva is better standing and on the ground and I think he'd submit Herring if he got taken down. His jiu jitsu isn't as good as some people think, but he submitted Lutter and Henderson...both are pretty good on the ground themselves.

Government job= nothing better to do. :D

I knew about the weight-cutting part but I didn't know they put that much back on in one day. Thanks for the info.

Heavyweights usually don't have to cut weight though. I forgot to mention that. Most fit well under the 265 lb limit and don't worry about it. Guys like Lesnar, who probably weighs around 285...have to cut though.

BTW, where do you work? If you don't mind me asking.

I'm substitute teaching today...so I have little to nothing to do as well. Kind of boring watching high school kids work/talk. I have to pretend I don't hear them talking about things that aren't related to the work their doing .

I think the move to HW, for Silva, is an interesting thought....but what about GSP @ MW?

That could be an intersting matchup as they've both got an outstanding 'all-around' skillset, with advantages going to both in certain areas.

Later.

It'd be interesting if Silva does make the move to HW but I'll just wait until it comes from him or his trainers about this. For the moment, I'll just have to pray that he gets some competition at the MW division .

Silva is good, but he wouldn't make it very far in the ring with guys like Lesnar, Mir, and Heath Herring.

I want to know why Silva hasn't fought Okami yet............

Okami is like a forgotten guy at MW. I know he hasnt lost since Franklin but he really hasnt beaten any of the elite in the division to earn a title shot either in my eyes. Personally I rather not see Silva fight Okami because I think he wouldnt challange him anymore than the rest of the guys in the division.

I think after the Leites fight, everybody in MW turned into a forgotten name. :D

It's like Joe Silva and Dana are just looking at each other and saying, what in the world can we possibly do now? This guy just destroyed a whole weight class with ease and made them all look stupid while doing so.

Fighting Okami would allow Silva to avenge his last loss...even though it was via DQ for an illegel upkick. It was a pretty awesome kick. It would be a massacre though. It definitely wouldn't be the best opponent for Silva if the UFC is truly interested in upping the competition level for him. He has to move up.
